Cheap C02 Unit.

Hi,
just wondering what the cheapest c02 unit might be? I want a pressurised unit with a solenoid so I can plug it in and forget about it.

What size tank are you looking to use it on?

If you don't go the DIY FE route you'll be spending a lot on CO2 as most of the kits come with tiny 500g bottles (and are expensive) or even smaller disposable cans (300g).

The small disposable welding cans make for a fairly cheap setup - but it's still a DIY job. There's a good thread over on UKAPS about this setup.

CO2 fire extinguisher is no more dangerous than using a store bought co2 kit. It will still come with a pressurised bottle.
This way is just ALOT cheaper. Alot of people on this forum including myself have taken this route and no one has died yet lol
All im saying is dont rule it out, research into it and talk to some people in the planted section and your see.
This is definately the way to go if you dont want to spend £££££££££££££

Deffo.. Im just buying the parts i need then the FE at the end of the month.. Looks very straight forward using the guide on here. Prob cost about £85-£90 to get going

I am in the middle of doing a co2 setup.. With top notch regulater and german made solenoid.. And other bits and bobs.. The bottle I will be using is a good size 20 OZ paintball cylinder. If is it get damaged it will simply gas off.. Many idiots manege broke this 1KG bottles under thair armpits..

Unlike a co2 fire extinguisher.. Due to a sypon system in the cylinder to put co2 on fire fast,, it will take off like a rocket if you damage the cylinder.. Evan a brick wall won't stop it..

With a 4 foot tank you'll be using a fair amount of CO2. Anything under a 2kg bottle will be very expesive to run.

With FE just use safe practices. Change the bottle outside and test fire it. Bring it to the tank and strap it so it can't fall over and then tape it open. As long as the fire extinguishers are within their 10 year lifespan (date stamped into the metal of the bottle) and have been checked recently (paper label on the side); then they are as safe as any presurized system.

Possible the most dangerous part of the system and a part that is often overlooked (and this is true with most systems) is the pressure gauges. When you open any bottle make sure the gauges are turned away from you and anyone; just in case.

The danger with compressed gas in cyliners comes from them falling over and knocking the taps off. If this happens then they will go through brick walls / out the roof / through the tank etc. As I said earlier; adopt best practices. Lie bottles down flat at all times unless they are strapped upright.

We have about 200 hanging off wall brackets scattered around our office, if they were dangerous they wouldnt be there and we wouldnt be able to put out fires. The regulators are pretty solid bits of kit, people seem to like putting the fear of god into others with daft tales of them going boom! You are more likely to get hit by a bus than have any problems with them. imo!
