What do you think? These two have been together for about 2 wks, they are rarely apart except for when feeding. The female I think is the one on the bottom, but please feel free to correct me on that, she is slimmer, lighter in colour & has a thinner jaw. The male is very protective & if one of the others comes near they get a swift nip, then he returns to lay back on top of her.

sorry for the not so great pictures, they are in an awkward spot.

There also seems to be one other female (I think) & I've been watching what I think is courting behavoir? The male has been moving in front of her & them swimming backwards over the top of her, then flairing his fins & gills, its quite funny watching him try to swim backwards.

They are better than telly now :good: lol

So what do people think? A possible pair? Do I just leave them now for a few more weeks & see if they stay together? How long before I can be confident of a pair & remove the others?

hey that does look promising, i would give it a few more weeks to see if they stay together as you dont want it to turn out as just

friendlyness, however if you can move these two to a seperate tank then do so, if they stay happy and together hey brilliant, maybe

give it to mid week if you want to seperate them to another tank, best of documenting all the odd little bits of behaviour as

remembering this is the first time theyve been grown from fry to adulthood so all documenting is a great idea even if you think its

silly,good luck :good:

Thanks Nelly, they are still together, although they do keep moving to different spots in the tank, the others arent happy though & keep trying to split them up, which leads to some big impressive scraps.

I'm going to give them one more week, then they are going into a new tank I think, see if their behavoir changes or not? There has been lots more odd courtship dances going on with the others, the largest one looks really impressive, i'm hoping I can borrow a little video camera to capture him dancing on film, it would be great if I could get two pairs from them eventually.

My 5 fish are getting quite aggressive towards eachother. I have 1 runt which is the smallest. i have not noticed any two sticking together yet. Could this mean i only have males or females? Could a pair still form?

I have noticed strange puffing and stiffening going on between some.

Hello mike been a while...

Well they seem to go through an aggressive stage proir to forming pairs...could take a while, what size are they now? is there any major aggression yet? what is your waterchange regime?

I would reccomend feeding them alot of live blood worm then after a few weeks do a 25% waterchange and see what happens from that,

This is what i did with my pair<before i sold them>and a couple of days after the waterchange they spawned for me again and now i have another batch of fry...

They chase eachother and bite. On some of them they got nips on the fins. Nothing major. I actually videoed them this eve doing that funny dance thing. I just changed the water today.....25% and re arranged the rocks so there are more hiding places.

I will post some pics.

Here it is....i will try and get a better video. I have seen it when 2 of them together do the dance. In this video it looks like the smaller one is not interested.

Where can i get live blood worms? I went to the local fish shop and got frozen ones.

Another video of my tank. I left the camera recording for 30mins then sped the video up. I love the snail dance at the end.

local fish shop,maybe but i never looked<ebay??

that does look promising, they are looking well :good: good sign having a hug halfway through  about 44secs into the video

looking very healthy mate....Dont see any signs of damaged fins which is great and there colours are vivid :good:
