Changing To A New Filter

I have recently invested in an Eheim external pump to replace the internal one supplied with the tank. Before I plumb in the new pump, I assume I should take some water from my tank, place it into my spare tank and use the filter on that for a week or so, in order that it can start growing the necessary bacteria? Or is there a more effective way to prepare the new filter for use?
