How long should a good powerhead last? I just bought a tank from a man that had the tank running for 8 years. Fowlr. He only used the power head for circulation behind the rocks. I want to set up a nano reef. Well thats all fine and good but the powerhead took a dump after all this time and gave me a bit of a zap. Its a 29 US Gallon. Before anyone asks I took all the fish back to the store as he had a butterfly and a engineer goby in there along with two other fish.(percula clown and coral beauty) circulation is now being kept by a 80 gallon capacity canister.

Good question, but I think eight years he has had his monies worth - you will need to replace it though for flow around the live rock

how about starting a journel of your new tank?

Oh and where are my manners  :hi: to the salty side

I would but it has been a really rough start so far. I already have the live rock and sand in. The guy forgot to include salt when I bought it and when I got home I realized. And the stores had closed for the night. THe only thing I could think of was to float the bags in freshwater with the heaters running to keep them alive. I had 4 when I started but, I lost 3 of them. It was a real shame too. A black and white percula clown, a coral beauty and a rare butterfly fish I've never seen before. All that made it until I could get off work the next day was an engineer goby that I returned to the store because he had been though enough and was way too large for this 29 gallon tank.

So basically I am going to do a lot of upgrading since I want a nano reef. Besides having huge amounts of live rock and the canister filter I have no idea how the fish survived.
