Changing My Filter

I have a 10 gallon tank with a basic filter (It came from Walmart if that helps).

The box of filters I bought say that I should change the filter every month. But then I read about people squeezing their filters out and re-using them (and other techniques).

I am assuming that the filter makers want you to change them every month so you buy a new box of filters every 3 months

Do I need to change the filter every month ? Or can I change it less often ?

Hi digsy,

I've got a similar set-up and, as you say, I just clean the filter sponge in old tank water when doing my water changes every couple of weeks. Been going for a while now like this and it's absolutely fine.
