i have a cory species tank split into 2 for 2 types of cory running for about 6 weeks or so and the external wasnt cycled when added but i have had a sponge filter that was cycled running alongside it. the water stats have been fine never had amonia or nitrite showing on API liquid tests.
i now have a larger tank for my corys and want to transfer them over but the only mature filter i have spare is the sponge 1 that has been hopefully been seeding the external on the 1st cory tank. i do have other cycled tanks but only my com tank has transferable media and i have had 2 fish die recently so im keeping a close eye on that tank and dont want to disturb it.
what i want to know is if i remove the sponge filter out of the older cory tank should the external thats been running now alongside it for 6 weeks or so be mature enough for a group of about 10 corys? i know they arent massive waste producers but i dont want to start stressing them out with water quality probs etc....
the new tank is a rio 180 and will also just contain corys but of a different species that are also breeding, this tank will be used also as a growing out tank for the fry once they have reached a size that means they dont get sucked into the filter!
the sponge filter is large and capable of use on both tanks looking at the size of it so i dont think the new tank will suffer as there are only going to be 8 corys in for now, its the running tank im worried about by removing a large piece of cycled media away......
