Hello everybody. I have a Betta fish, and his name is Demostene. He is a magnificant red color, and is a VT.

I was thinking of going over to the mall today to get a bigger tank from the pet store for him. I've had him for a month now, and I've kept him in a 1 gallon (yes, a bit on the small side). So, since I love Demostene so much, I've decided that I might want to move him into a 2 gallon. Not sure how much it would cost, but hopefully not overly pricey. My local petstore isn't very cheap....

Anyhow, if I did end up buying him a new tank how exactly would I get him used to it? My friend and I were at her house, and we decided that her Bettas water needed a change. So, in the middle of it all, my friend accidently dropped the bowl (luckily, the betta fish had been removed first) and it broke. So, of course, she had to quickly move him into something until she could buy him a new tank. She had moved into a temporary vase, and he seemed to like the more room. But, two days later, he died for unknown causes. Is this because the change of habitat was so quick, do you think? I don't want this happening to my poor Demostene!

So, as I was saying, how would I get my fishy used to his new tank without shocking him to death? Help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Acclimate him.
There's a thread somewhere here that Jollysue wrote up about a method of acclimating shipped fish, and you could use that method for your betta as well.
Normal acclimatizing is simply putting him into a small bag or cup with the water from his original tank, and floating the bag in the new tank. Do this for 15 mins and then add a little of the tank water in the bag. Keep doing this until all the water is in the bag.
Also, make sure you add water dechlorinator/conditioner.

Your water chemistry should be the same so it would be like a 100% water change when you change from the bowl to a tank some natural gavels and sands will alter the ph. A lot of people do weekly 100% water changes without any bad effects.
