I am switching out my Penguin 200 w/BIO Wheel filter for an Eheim Ecco 2232 cannister filter.

Certainly this has done before. How risky of a process is this? Will running both filters for 2-3 weeks be enough to avoid problems? Logically, it seems there wouldn't be much bacteria growth in the new filter since the old one will be handling most of the duties, and then I'd have an ammonia/nitrite spike when I disconnect the old filter. What about just turning off the old filter and floating the BIO Wheel in the water for a few weeks?

You can just run both filters at the same time for about a month, then remove the old filter. Otherwise, if you have substrate in the tank, then you shouldn't have any problems just using the new filter, since the benificial bacteria should have colonized the substrate.

Just take the media from the old filter and put it in the new one, then once running for a few weeks, take the bio wheel filter material out and thats it.

I agree, I changed tanks aswell as filters and just ran both filters together and changed some media from my old Fluval 2 into my Juwel and the tanks were cloned very quickly, suffered no spikes at all.

You mean rip apart the bio wheel and put it in the new filter?
