I have a non generic tank that doesn't seem to be of any make or model, within the lid is an inbuilt filter unit.
I am at the stage where replacing some of the filter media is becoming required but as my filter is not a named one i have a problem.

The filter has 3 compartments, the 1st and 3rd parts has those ceramic rings in, whereas the central part has a circular sponge which encases a bag of carbon media.

Can I replace the above items that are not the same, for example get rid of the middle section and replace it with other sponge like media? I know not to replace everything at once due to my friendly bacteria that has developed... any ideas?

I would say replacing the sponge with a slightly different one shouldn't be a problem as long as you get a similar size. Or buy a sheet of sponge and cut to fit?
Don't cram something that's too big in there or water flow will be reduced....etc.

Hi, the ceramic rings (aka 'noodles') should only be replaced if they are badly crumbling. In that case any make that fits your budget can be used.

The sponge again should only be replaced if it is falling apart. If it is shaped to go into a compartment then have a look in the pond dept for a chunk that is a bit bigger and cut it down to fit. (electric carving knife is good for that job)

Chuck the carbon filter but don't replace it, use the space for extra sponge.

If you have some room try a layer of fine white cotton media at the imput side, it helps stop the rest of the media getting clogged.

Remember, all media should be gently giggled about in old tank water to clean it from time to time but never all at once
