I need to change my filter media and I have been and bought some new ones. I know that I can't just change the media coz of the bacteria. I've never had to change the media before and was just wondering how I go about having both sets in the tank at the same time. x

Hi,

Change 1/3 of the sponge at a time. Cut 1/3 off and replace with fresh sponge. Wait 4 weeks, cut another 1/3 off and replace with new sponge, wait 4 weeks, take the last 1/3 out and replace withe the last 1/3 of the new sponge. Job done! :good:

Waiting 4 weeks inbetween should give ample time for the bacteria to colonise the new bits of sponge. After each change, keep a close eye on ammonia levels for a few days to make sure everything is ok.

Hope that helps.

Thank you I'll try that.

My other question would be: I have had the filter in the tank since originally set up in april ish time and up until a month ago had never needed to clean the sponges. I washed them out in tank water and since then have had to do them about every 2 weeks. Why would that be? nothing new has gone in the tank for about 3 months and I always do regular cleans! x
