Changing Entire Filter Media

Hi all!!

In my main tank I have an Ehiem 2007 Canister filter. I brought a little Juwel filter to accompany this filter because it was struggling to cope. The reason is that the filter media is about 5 months old. It gets bi-weekly cleans but it's age is starting to catch up. Finally, though I've managed to find a replacement media!! However, i'm concerned that replacing the whole media in the Ehiem filter will cause the stability to crash! (If that makes sense)!!

How can I go about changing the media without crashing the tank?

replace half, wait, then replace the other half when the new bit is populated

I can't replace half - it's all one piece. It's a cyclinder piece of foam here!
- That's all there is in the 2007 filter.

this is the same as my fluval 2.

i simply cut the existing and new cylinders in two. mix n match

another tip: I like to feed my fish lighly two days before and two days after any filter changes.
