Lets say I have a 22 gallon tank with only guppies (3 female 1 male). I feed them twice a day, there is a few fake plants in the aquarium. Taking this info. in to consideration what are the chances of the fry being eaten? I am trying to have as much fry as possible and do not want the female to delay birth due to stress from a breeding tank and have heard that most guppies wont eat guppy fry...so I want u guys to tell me what the better option is...keeping in mind I only have guppies in the tank no other fish and there are a total of 4.

morning :)

guppies are just like any other fish, if it will fit into theyre mouths then they will eat it :/ from my own personal exp i would say, if you can get a load of bushy type plants/moss thrown into the tank, lots of decs that they can hide in/under, then they will stand a much better chance..

on the other hand have ypu seen Ludwigs guppy pond? thousands of guppies , breeding is what they do best.. just add water :)

good luck, hope all goes well for you :)

I agree with shelagh. The fry can be pretty hardy though, I put a 2 day old in my cube against 10 strong shoal of lamps and they set on him, so decided against putting the others in, to my wonderful surprise he turns up every so often grwoing well just like the others. My tank is heavily planted though and this is the key xx

Welcome to the forum Guppyman.
I find that adequate cover in my guppy tank means that I always have fry surviving. In my case the cover is a handful of java moss but any cover will do. If the adults are well fed, which it sounds like yours are, the fry will survive in large enough numbers that further precautions about saving fry are not needed. In my 10 gallon, a starting trio of adult guppies has given me enough surviving fry that I sold about 10 adults last fall, then I sold another dozen to a fellow club member and today I only have about 20 adults and another 30 or more fry in that same 10 gallon tank. Every time I have have opportunity I sell off all of the adult guppies that I can catch and just wait for the fry to grow up and become my breeders. This also means that most of the fry that I deal with are highly inbred, but as long as I cull the deformed fry I am actually improving my colony's quality. These days I find that other knowledgeable club members want to get more of my fish because of the quality that they see in my fish that started out being nothing better than generic AOC pet shop guppies that I have allowed to breed rather freely in proper guppy conditions with almost no culling required.
