I have seen several internet "sources" claim that Ceratopteris thalictroides (water sprite) is "supposedly" carcinogenic, but none of these sources have any citations as to where they got this information.

If so, I would assume the levels contained are very small because of how commonly this plant is used in aquariums with little to no observed drawbacks. Many fish eat this plant daily with no apparent issues, which makes me skeptical of these "facts".

Is this correct, are there carcinogens contained in this species? Is there any fact behind these claims?

carcinogens are found everywhere, more than likley it will be in every specie of plant, rock & wood.
The most common is radon which is found in rocks, you will notice more radioactivity in cities due to more buildings, or in places such as quarries
