At this stage, I have silver hatchets, neon tetras, corydoras, pleco, sailfin mollies and 4 sailfin fry (in a hatchery). I'm wanting 1 really good centrepiece fish to set the tank off. I have experimented with bettas but they die almost straight away and I had an anostomous anostomous but he was a bit aggressive so returned him to my LFS. So, can anybody suggest a species that would fit the bill and be happy in my community tank?

There are a couple problems with putting a center piece fish in a community tank. First, most fish suitable for community tanks prefer to be in groups, thus meaning having just one is not advised. Second, most fish that can be kept singly are usually more aggressive. Of course, there are excepetions to both of those statements.

What size tank do you have? An angel fish is a nice centerpiece fish that will work in a community tank. They do need a larger tank though and could be a problem with the neons as that is their natural prey.

Would he be able to get something like a powder blue gourami? Imo beautiful and stands out well, and is also not aggressive.

if you get a community fish that grows bigger than 2 inches it should be able to become the "centerpiece"
the only thing you'll have to watch out for is that since it grows bigger than some of the other fish it might just eat them....
like truckasauras said above a blue german ram would be really nice. they have fantastic colours!
