I think pearls are generally regarded as the hardiest gourami

I beg to differ - look it up on the net under Gourami disease - there are articles galore! heres one :

'Being widely sold doesn’t mean that gouramis are easy to keep, and these fish all too frequently sicken and die within a few months of being purchased. Dwarf gouramis appear to be among the fish most likely to contract bacterial infections if water quality or water chemistry isn’t exactly right. The symptoms are bloody sores on the body and a loss of appetite, and short of veterinarian help (i.e., antibiotics), nothing much seems to help.

Even with antibiotics, the prognosis isn’t particularly good, and you should definitely never buy dwarf gouramis from a tank containing specimens showing any signs of this type of infection.But even starting off with healthy fish might not help, as some aquarists believe that virtually all commercially-bred dwarf gouramis (and probably other gouramis as well) carry the bacteria, so the issue isn’t keeping the bacteria out of the tank but trying to make sure it doesn’t become a problem which is virtually impossible.'

oh, well i'll just have to hope for the best then. i've had gouramis before with no problems, so i think i'll still get them. i'll make sure i won't get any if there are any ill in the tank.

i think its pot luck really and ive heard of the male dwarfs fighting but ive had 2 for just over a week now (both males) and they stick together 24/7 i think they would be lost without each other

yes, i'm not sure about getting a centre piece fish now. i might just get the corys and shrimp and then see how it goes. and possibly in a couple of months get a centre piece fish.
