I'm sure you are fine... Flowerhorn's get big and that sand won't hurt him in anyway. I'm using Aragonite sand for my tank, and I find the best way of cleaning sand is just stir it up a bit, then bring in your gravel vac to start sucking up the waste. Therefore your filter will get some and your gravel vac will take some of the waste.

if you want to clean it before you put
it in your tank i find putting a few hand fulls at a time
in a large bucket washing it with a slow running hose pipe till it runs clear
with cold water i know this is a chew on but i find its the best way
once you have washed your first batch place in the tank you are putting
it in and start the next and keep repeating till all is washed
to clean it in the tank once installed do it with a gravel cleaner
as you would with gravel just dont let it get as far up the cleaner
if you feel it is just put you finger over the end of the pipe
and let it drop back in to the tank hope this helps

i still think play pit sand is the safer option
after all kids try to eat it

thanks for the advices, im done with the tank i added everything to it, i added the sand and while i was adding the water it didnt even cloud it up it really clear right now,all i need to do now is the cycling process, any advices to speed this up?i heard that adding a filter from an old tank to a new one or something from the old tank to a new one will speed it up?any advice before i use this?.1 problem though i have a heater and it keeps going on and off water gets warm then after it goes off water turns a little cold will i need to get a new heater? its a 300 watt odyssea aquarium submersible heater..

yes a mature filter would work just make sure
you use a dechlorinator before you put your old filter
in the tank the heater had a built in thermostat that brings
it up to a set temperature what does it bring the water
up to
