My CBS has already molted once, but it did it again today after only a couple weeks and got it's large arms stuck in the process. It seems ok, and its eating, but I really feel awful. I know the arms will grow back if it's not something in the water giving it molt trouble. I assumed the iodine was ok since the first molt went alright. I have a hermit that has also shed recently with no trouble...is this a freak accident or do I need to do some serious water testing when I get home today?

I think its just an accident. Before I sold mine, he molted and twisted his arm. It looked like an S bend. They will either remove their own arm, or at the next moult, grow back a straight one. :good:

My guy lost his arm while molting. Amazingly, I watched it grow back, and if I remember correctly, it was back within a week.

Glad it isn't an indicator of a mega water problem. I tested for everything I could and it came out fine, so I guess I can just sit back and wait.

They will either remove their own arm

 these guys must be tougher than I thought...

yeah my cbs lost an arm about a year ago,
and it grew back pretty quickly.

as for how often they molt, I think it varies somewhat,
but my cbs and cleaner both molt about once a month,
hermits a little harder to guage, probably twice as long, depending on which types
mine are red-leg, which do not grow very large.

Well the big arms are back today, along with the attitude. For a while there I had a shrimp that was actually nice  The new arms look maybe a tad smaller than they were before but the size difference is pretty miniscule. So that makes 2 weeks. Not a bad recovery rate! Glad I have my bristleworm "solution" back in action. :p

Wicked to hear! :good: Such amazing creatures! I liked my shrimp, but he just couldnt stay, he'd trample every coral! :grr: If you try and move them, id advise not to use a mesh net, thats how my guy lost both his arms when he was sold! :X Good to hear your bristles wont be runnig the tank any more! :p

Err...tried to post this about 4 times now over the last couple days (anyone else getting SQL errors? :/ )

What kind of corals does your CBS trample? Mine sits in/on/near my tongue coral all day. Fortunately the coral doesn't mind it much, but it's such a strange behavior I have to wonder if these shrimp want a certain type of coral to sit in or something.

He trampled everything. My Alveopora, Torch coral, my Dunc., Shrooms, Cladiella, evreything I had, he just walked over.

I have 2 questions. Does the molt need to be removed or is there a natural way it is disposed of? And what do you mean "trampled," does walking on the corrals ruin them?
