Hi everyone
I currently have a common plec in with my cichlids but realise he will grow too big for the tank. Can anyone suggest a good replacement that will be able to stay with the cichlids as a good companion. Keeping in mind that I intend to move the frontosa to a 1000g tank elsewhere and get some smaller cichlids
Thanks in advance

syno petricola
Two other commonly available options would be S. multipunctatus and S. nyassae.

I have 3 petricola's myself. Still juveniles, so they're a little shy... but really cute and very interesting fish. They definitely add something different to an otherwise completely mbuna tank.

Thanks every one and no I don't have 1000g tank. Silly me meant 100g and not mine, but I want to make sure the Frontosa goes to a good home in a tank at least that size.

These might be what was mentioned above but I have always had sedydonis catfish with my chiclids. I believe they are together in the "wild".

I think a 40 might be a little small for a nyasse or multipunctatus
While petricola are the smallest of the three, multipunctatus don't get much bigger. Neither will get much more than 4". Nyassae do get a bit big for the 40 though. Good point.

Really? Wow. There are too many sites out there claiming otherwise. I guess sometimes the info just isn't reliable, even if you do cross reference... :/

Thanks for the correction, freddy...

Yup, I've seen some with my own eyes.

Of course, these guys were over fifteen years old too

Yup, they do grow rather large. I saw one near 8 inches as well. Almost 1 inch thick near the head! I think nyassae grows even larger, so I'd recomend S Petricola as well. (as many as you can afford - these guys aren't cheap!)

As for a different taste, you could try bristlenose plecos - I have them in my mbuna tank and they do fine in there as well...
