Cat Attacking Fish!

Get a spray bottel that you use for spraying plants, set the nozzel to jet then a few shots of that will stop him/her.
TAKE NOTE OF MY AVATAR,Our old cat use to lay on the hood for hours "not silly cats" it was warm.

My parents had one cat that just loved looking at my tanks when I lived there. I wish I had a pic of it but imagine a huge cat that looks like Mislisas, laying behind the tank (no background) and has his big pink nose pressed against the tank and his eyes darting back and forth watching the fish. Every so often he would reach his paw around the side slowly and try to "grab" the fish. They were his fish lol.

He never got on top of them, just watched. If he got too exited I would spray him with a water bottle. I shook it before spraying him so he associated that noise with water. After a while all I had to do was shake the bottle or let him see the bottle and he was gone. I tried the double sided sticky tape meant for furniture but it didn't phase him.

I suggest labeling the bottle as water only or something of the sort so someone doesnt put bleach or other cleaner in there. Our bottles always said "water for bad kitties". My mom has a lot of cat drama lol.

Great idea shaking the bottle first!

One of my cat “chatters” when she sees my sucker fish. Had cats for 20 years
And have never known anything like it. It's hilarious!

Search youtube for chattering cats! Amazing if u have never seen it before!

“Water for bad kitties” love it!!

I have heard cats don't like fresh orange peel, it hurts their eyes or something, so maybe put some orange peel around the tank, that way the cat won't go near it. It's worth a try, that way you don't have to sit next to the tank every time your cat is in the house

My cats do the "chattering" thing when they see a bird outside (inside cats). Looked it up a while ago because it was too funny. I guess it means they are really excited but frustrated because they can't get to whatever it is.

Yea mine are indoor too (first cats I've kept indoors) as I live
On a busy road and not a cat friendly area

My friend moved to this area before I did with a female and her kitten.
Female got ran over n kitten got kicked to death by some evil
Children!! ( If I had seen that I'd be in jail for murder by now)
Both mine chatter at the birds! One of my cats climbed to the top
Of the window the other day. Hooked her legs round the frame with her whole
Body outside and was chattering at every car that went by!

Awww!

Oh wow, I've never seen cats chatter before! My cat is nearly 12 and has never done it; I suppose because she's allowed outdoors.

Thanks for all the great replies everyone! I am just trying to find an unused squirty bottle now but in the mean time I've put a towel over the tank as she was getting rather aggresive. All that my cat does at the moment is make squeaky noises at them, I'd love it if she started chattering though, it sounds really funny!

I bet there's looaads of people out there with the same problem as me! It started off being quite funny watching my 5 month old tabby following the fishies movements around the tank, but now it's an all out battle between me saving the fish and her getting them. She continously jumps right up to the tank and scares the fish half to death, they are very pale and the shrimp never come out any more  .

So, any suggestions on how to stop her from getting the fish?

Will she get bored of them when we finally let her outside after being neutered?

Infact if anyone has any funny pics of cats and fishtanks this'd be the time to show them off! :fun:

Buy a large aggressive cichlid! put it in a tank where your moggy can get to it & watch the fun - :shifty: kill or cure.

Nah, seriously mate, I once had a cichlid that regularly "went for" my missus (displaying all the territioral colouring & aggression typical of big cichlids)
:D I'd like to see a Massive cichilid trying to squeeze it way around my puny 35l Biube. Nice idea though!!!

I trained a my cats(ragdolls) to do a few things....one of them was not to eat poison dart frogs lol. Filling a empty drinks bottle with 1/4 full of gravel when the cats went near the frog tanks shake at them....they hate the sound....took about 2 weeks now they dont go near very often at all

My cat isn't really interested in the fish, except to have a drink of their water, she silent chatters at birds sometimes but she is so useless at actually catching birds most of them laugh at her. My resident green tree frogs where always interested in my tanks and often would line up along the front of the tank and try to eat the guppies through the glass. My sisters cat used to sit on top of the oscar tank, until the oscars got so big when they leapt up they could dislodge the glass covers and the cat got her tail nipped a few times, end result the cat stayed well away from the tanks after that.

There are so many things you can train a cat to do. but they will only do it on their terms and if it's in their best interests.

for example i have 4 cats and each does different tricks

Tammy - jump up, kiss

Tango - kiss, lay down, jump up

Lilly - comes when her name is called, speak, jump up

Tia - also knows her name (i can call them separately when the're both upstairs), speak, peek a boo, come and get ya and jump up.

they perform for cuddles and ham or cheese

but i have found nothing that will permanently stop them going after my fishies! the idea of a nice fishy meal is just too tempting!

I love my babies!

Cats are just so funny to watch! I have just about stopped her from going near it.... for now! I couldn't find a bottle so instead I picked her up every time she got near the tank and took her to the other side of the house and then flicked a bit of water at her! She still loves watching them but hasn't gone near them yet :D

i think you're leaving out too much of a time frame to put water on her. when any animal performs an undesired action, the correction has to come the same second or they have trouble undersanding what they are being punished for. i think what makes your cat not come up to the tank is the fact that you're picking her up and taking out of the room.

If i were you i would just annoy her everytime she jumps up. However you should be careful not to associate YOURSELF with a punishment (and picking her up as a punishment is just that). Maybe clap your hands and raise your voice instead. Water will work too.

Many trainers use just water, voice, and respect. Voice is a very powerful tool, even big cats respond well to a change in the tone.

my cats learned not to jump up on the counters just in that manner. I would clap my hands from far away and shout smth like "a-a-a" or "HEY". if they were still there looking at me like im an idiot, I would keep coming closer and clapping simultaneously all the way up until i'm clapping in front of their whiskers. They'll move away trust me. Then, after some time i could just clap and shout from far away and they would jump off. In some more time they just stopped jumping alltogether.

Once i even put the cat on the counter myself and he just jumped off right away.

Just takes patience!
