I am in the process of planting my tank. It is nearly done but i have a bare patch of substrate (sand) at the front middle of the tank that needs filling. I would quite like some form of "carpet" plant, I have no luck with Riccia in the past so was thinking of trying Java Moss.

What is the best way to grow it? On stone held in place with hairnet or direct into substrate?

sorry for my noobishnes

i may be wrong but i think its best attached to something, i use this site and recently bought the java fern and moss on terracotta stick

i got some Moss on a piece of wood from my lfs, looks rather good in the tank. May get another piece as well.

in answer to your question, java moss can be tied with cotton or fishing line to a stone, i also have expreience of it attaching itself to the substrate naturally, although my substrate is gravel, not sure sand grains will be big enough, i also wouldn't use a hairnet in this situation personally. once its attached (couple of months) you can if you want remove fishing line, cotton naturally degrades overtime so wont need removing, then let the moss grow and trim it to your own liking, all the trimmed bits can also be tied down onto something. its also best when initially fixing the moss to spread it out thinly and not just in a clump, if you wanted to fill in a particular area then maybe getting some plastic mesh in the shape you need to fill and attach the moss to this, although depending on the size of the area that may take quite a while as java moss is fairly slow growing and you would need to weight the plastic down. hope this helps.
