Cardinals were less hardy as until recently they were all wild caught & needed more time to acclimatise. Now they are tank bred they seem more tolerant.
I've had individuals of both species to over eight years old & think it depends on the health of the stock purchased. Neither thrives in less than mature tanks and neons possibly get more abuse as they are cheaper.

Cards travel poorly- even if its just from the store home to your tank. I lost many of them at first til a person with 50 years of experience keeping fish told me a great trick to increase the survival rate- feed them newly hatched bbs for the first week or two after you get them.

cards, if you don't have a quarantine tank, don't try quarantining them in a small plastic floating breeder. They just died after a day or two, so I tried acclimatizing and adding water then just plopping them in and still 1 died out of 4.

i love both but after losing 14 neons to ntd over the years i would never get them again........maybe we're lucky but we've had no problems with cardinals at all & we live in a hard water area :)

when i started this poll i was sure that neons would win .... this is a supriseing result to me
