I have recently gotten a group of 20 cardinals but have been expressing and interest in rummie's and black neons. I know they would mix ok but my concern is that they would all join together into one huge school. Personally I hate mixed schools, should I just get more cardinals then?

I have 8 Rummy Noses,8 Black Neons and 10 Standard Neons(almost the same as Cardinals) and they are always schooling together i think the look quite cool,They seem to race each other up and down the tank,The neons race the Rummys,then the Black Neons have a go....its quite funny to watch sometimes

we've had cardinals & rummys together for nearly 3 yrs & they dont really school together at all but do seem to like pottering around in the same areas of the tank - ive never seen ours go for a big swim around the tank in one big group though. in fact our cardinals dont school together very much at all they seem to do their own thing the rummys can be spotted occasionally going off for a swim around together but they too have their own little spots in the tank.little tetras tend to school in a tight group when they feel threatened & i think our lot have worked out theres nothing to be frightened of in our tank and feel safe (which i like) i dont have any experience with black neons but theyre all gorgeous fish!

Ive had rummynose with neons. Rummys are one of the best schooling fish out there IMO. They are nearly always together in a tight school. If one heads across the tank, the others invariably follow. They rarely stay still for long.
Neons on the other hand (after they get used to a tank) seem to break off into smaller groups and sit in place for long periods. After they get comfortable in a tank their schooling instinct seems to decrease steadily. Not so with Rummys! What I have found is that the neons sometimes will get involved in the schooling behaviour of the rummys, probably instinct kicking in. They see the rummys swimming quickly in a tight school and instinct causes them to join them. Not all of them, but small numbers will often join the rummys for a bit and then break off on their own. (The rummys probably tire them out - Don't bet against a rummy in an endurance race

i think its a great combo
if i had a big enough tank i would keep the same fish black neons are like cardinals exept differnt colors -i think that that makes it soo cool to keep them together
and rummys are great schooling fish

I totally agree as I notice the same with my neons and rummynoses.
What would you say, is a good size for a shoal or rummy noses? Is it the more the better? I currently have 10 rummynoses and they are always together, would the same apply if I added another 10?
The problem with this though is that these rummys in my tank are quite big and fat, getting new ones from the LFS will create a noticeable size difference as the ones from the LFS are tiny, will this be an issue?

Indeed I would say that my rummy' s don't shoal nearly as much since the cardianls were introduced. I think they used to be scared of thier own shadows (literally) but have more conifdence with the cardinals present!
Even so they are still the best shoalers you can buy.... ....pity they can be so delicate (they are unkindly known as 'crummy' noses in the trade)
