Hi guys and girls,

I'm looking to add schoaling fish to my 400 litre planted community tank and was thinking of either of the cardinal or neon tetra but not sure of which or maybe if anyone on this forum had a better choice that I haven't thought of, any advice or ideas would be much appreciated.

I don't know about tetras, but if you are looking for a smaller tetra, I personally would go for the cardinals, as neons are pretty common (i know cardinals are too) but I have always been a big fan of the deep red hues in the cardinals.....but if you are looking for something a little different, red eyed tetras are pretty cute too :)

Cardinals are the bigger of the two, neons-just over 2cm...Cardinals-3.5cm

Personally i would go for the neons because of their size, and for that same reason you could have a couple more of them. How many do you want? In a 400 liter planted you could have quite a few of those little guys.

I don't know what the water is like where you're at, but the Cardinals that come in to the LFS (more than one) seem to have difficulty in our water. They have been experiencing massive die offs. When I was wholesaling to the petstores, we wouldn't even carry Cardinals because of the same problem. But that was back when they were wild caught, so I could understand that. Not sure what's going on with the LFS now. These should all be tank raised now. I guess what I'm trying to say is, for me, Neons are the hardier of the two. The Neons I see all look pretty good. Of course, Cardinals are much nicer looking colorwise, I'm just afraid to buy them after what I see and hear from the LFS.

In my experiance with Cardianls I would have to agree with the above, I added 18 cardinal Tetra to my cycled tank and lost half of them in 2 weeks (victims were inactive from the start), the ones I have remaining are very active and seem healthy.

I have done some reasearch and it seems a lot of experianced fish keepers say to expect around a 50% loss rate with Cardinals, I beleive it is down to most of them being taken from the wild and not taking to well to all the transfers between tanks. I dont have any experiance with Neons but always found the Cardinals more pleasing on the eye.

I want to up my Cardinal numbers but worried about more unwanted deaths.

Thanks for all of the replies, I was at first thinking of neons but then my lfs said cardinals look better to which I see in he's tanks having the deeper red along bottom half of body, he was explaining that people used to be scared of cardinals because they didnt like our water when shipped over but he makes sure that he only buys tank bred ones which are fine in our water, the reason why i was first unsure of neons as I'd read about neon tetra disease but he said he'd not heard of that in a while. Cardinals are more expensive in he's shop but I dont know if thats the norm but I dont believe he is trying to sell me the more expensive as I get on very well with him. Water in our area is on the harder side. Yes knowing that I have such a big tank I was thinking of building up over time a number of 30+? Other tank mates are 5 bn, 3 clown loaches (now i have a bigger tank I am looking at adding 3 more) 3 golden barbs at which I am also looking at adding more, 5 Redhead eartheaters or tapajos, some plateys which eventually I will be re-homing, 1 rtbs who is fine in my set up, was worried about aggresion but seems to keep to himselfs and spends all he's day gliding over plants looking for algae. Thats it, honestly I've not long come over to the bigger tank so was looking at adding the schoaling fish and bulking up some of the numbers of fish that I already have. I will check out the red eyed tetra aswell.

Cardinals generally cost twice as much as neons here. That's why I was checking the Cardinals out at a few different shops. One chain had them advertised at $1.00 each! They are usually $3.99. Of course, both stores I went to in that chain couldn't keep them alive.

Really would they not do well or looked at as a tasty treat? I had some columbian tetras but the move must have really stressed them all as they all died acclimatising, spoke to lfs about it and he said they have been known to do that as they prefered to be settled and the move may have been to much for them, columbian tetra looks very similar to the mentioned before red eyed tetra.

I love the deeper colours of the Cardinals, but as said they aren't hardy. I started off with 6 and that has fluctuated to 15, and now down to 7. I think i've only got 2 large ones from the original 6 left. I think more than anything it's stress. They're always cowering and losing colour if you don't have enough cover for them.

That said, i'd go for Neons. In my local shop they're 10 for £5!!! Whereas the cardinals are £2.70 each!

So if you need to buy a big shoal, go for Neons. I didn't know anything about Cardinals until the woman at Pets at Home gave me them when i'd asked for Neons..she charged me at the same price and everything, just when i got in i realised!

I has neons and exchnaged them for Cardinal in my 350L

I much prefer the Cardinal being a little bigger my stock at the mo

12 Cardinal
14 Congo tetra
12 Harlequin Rasbora
8 cory sterbai
1 Apisto cac

I went for these fish based on there colours being feed live food and with plenty of space the colours in the tank a really amazing :good:

I much prefer the look of Cardinals over the Neon. Always deeper and more colourful. The slight size increase seems to give them more substance too.

However, I've never actually owned either because of all the horror storyies of both species (especially Neons) just dying for no reason. There's seemingly thousands of threads all over the internet of 'why did my Neon die' etc etc

I want a shoal of Cardinals though, they look great.

I have 14 cardinals in my 110 litre tank they are brilliant beautiful fish. I thinly they prefer well planted tanks with plenty of shade and a low ph. My ph is between 6.5-7 and they are fine but I believe they prefer lower
