Hi guys,
I've just moved to Cardiff, I'm wondering what the PH of the water here is (Roath) so I can decide what species to keep.

Hopefully someone in your local area will happen along to give you their observations! Meanwhile, don't forget that water authorities often have web sites or can be reached on the phone for this sort of information. The other thing to consider is that a good liquid-reagent based test kit is always a good thing to use for your pH and other tests because the final pipes leading to your particular house could make a difference too!

Good morning from sunny Port Talbot...!

The water in South Wales is generally very soft, mainly due to the miles and miles of rock and mountains that cascade behind us up into mid-Wales.

I have spoke with quite a few fish store workers around our area and alot of them say the same. What you really need to do is get a water hardness kit..this will prove whether or not Roath and Cardiff in general is the same. Soft water can have an effect on your PH during your cycling, it would 'crash' my PH during both fishless cycles i have done..but should it do that then we can get to that should/when it happens.

Agree with TTA - if you have any reason to believe that your water will turn out to be soft then it can be very helpful to obtain a GH/KH testing set and learn the various relationships with pH. In general, carbonate hardness tests (our KH tests get at this) will end up giving you a lot more leverage at knowing what is going on than pH alone will.
