Hello everyone, i have a carbon sponge in my Interpet PF2 filter and after reading around i see many people saying that the carbon filter is not needed unless you are treating the tank with medication.

Would this be correct ?

Thanks
LP

Yes this is correct. It wont last very long, and is generally used to clear the tank of medication after it has been treated. Replace it with a sponge ;)

Cheers i will do that later after a water change.

When keepers refer to removing carbon they are usually on about taking out the activated carbon chips. If your filter comes with a carbon sponge it may be part of the biological filtration and could hold a significant proportion of your good bacteria

Another important reason NOT to use carbon inserts,(learning about water filtration in school right now), is because if the inserts are old and breaking down, they will leach high amounts of pollutants back into the water. So yes, use them after medicating or to help remove wood tannins but don't intentionally add a carbon insert to your filtration system for long term use.

Ok i have replaced the carbon with another sponge. Thanks for the replies.
