Hi,

I have a Fluval 205 external filter and was wondering weather the carbon supplied with the filter is actually needed ? as i have read that it is completely unnecessary .. so my question is can i remove it from the filiter ?
If so would i need to put something in the empty media baskets ? or would it be fine empty

Thanks in advance :good:

I think most of us only use carbon after medicating a tank. It becomes completely saturated in as little as a day and at best in a couple weeks. And when you change it, you are throwing a large portion of your bacteria colony away. You should be fine to just discard it. I would suggest something like ceramic rings or Seachem Matrix in it's place.
