on a recent trip to an lfs they had a ctfish that i cant for the life of mr remember its name, common or latin  this description is very vague and ill be amazed if anyone can tell me what it was but thought it was worth a go

it was a light brown/sandy colour and about 6 inches in length. it was quite a wide fish that got very wide towards the head with a huge mouth the width of it... it was totally submerged under the gravel and without really looking for it you would never have seen it! the assistant put hid hand into the tank and lifted it out of the gravel so i could see it and within a minute it had dived into the substrate again totally covered. i cant remember seeing big whiskers but as it was a catfish it must have had some...

ive looked on planet catfish and didnt know where to start to be honest and gave up  ive never seen 1 before and was quite intrested in researching it a bit more. told you it was a poor description and vague but i thought that i would test all of you catfish experts minds  10 browny points for the fishes name :good:

just to add it was like the banjo catfish in overall shape with a huge mouth and head.

im making it too easy for you guys now......

Chaca Chaca? The frogmouth catfish. Interesting fact about them, in confined spaces they emit a chemical that plummets the ph of the tank to about 5..... They get to about 8 inches and eat anything they can fit in their huge mouths.

Wills your a legend :hyper: i knew i made it too easy..... thanks mate, the 10 browny points are yours :good:

im not sure this would fit in my new tank stocking then somehow...... shame as it was an awesome looking fish

Wills, have you heard of these before? if not how did you get the name?

I heard of them before because I want really rare catfish in my tank, since it looks like you have to pay through the teeth for catfish these days I want it to be something decent that will keep me interested in the same way headstanders do and my rainbow fish didnt lol

I found the chacas on an other forum where it was being kept with similar big fish to your plans and things disapearing quickly down its mouth as well as the ph thing.

What about some of the rarer banjo cats if you can find them? Ive always been put off them because of how inactive they are.

I agree with wills some of the rare banjo look great. Most only have small mouths so only small fry would be a target.
Some Platystacus cotylephorus would fit in well. You can keep one one its own or in pairs/groups.

Banjos are a type of Aspredinidae and theres quite a few other similar looking types

this is the only thing with alot of cats, they are so inactive or nocturnal fish. i really have a thing for catfish small or large and i know my suncats might not be everyones cup of tea but i love the way they look and the colours. at the same time i also would like cats that are away from the norm or slightly rarer etc but with a never ending list of cats its impossible to choose or even find actual specimins.... as i have got the 2 small suncats im sticking with them for now, ive also been offered 2 more slightly bigger ones. would 4 suncats be ok?

you should get a Asian sun catfish theyre a beautiful fish that i always regret selling mine he was so cool and they're not that common
