I'm struggling to get rid of the ammonia out of my tank, i got some new fish the other day and was warery of the load on the 2 filters so i was checking the water daily and it seems fine with ammonia or Nitrite in the water and the fish were swimming fine. I did a water change on friday which is part of my normal routine ,i used tap water as normal keeping the heat to pretty much what it already was. The fish were fine , before i went to bed i noticed my 2 rays swimming about which i thought was probs because theyre nocturnal i dont often see them swim and i was off to bed late, my Pbass was also nearer the top than other days but thought this would have been due to the way some fish sleep/ rest.

Anyhow come down this morning to find about £600-700+ of fish dead the only things living was my oscar and my Poly's (these can breathe air which probs helped them out) i checked the water and nitrite and ammonia had gone through the roof , like a bit darker than #8 on the api test kit! i quickly removed the dead fish ( not something i want to ever do again!) and did a 20 % water change, no differnce, i've now done 2 90% water changes and the ammonia is still at 2-4 on the api test kit. How can this be when so much of the water has been changed? I've checked the tap water which does have a funny smell to it i havent noticed before but it tested fine for Ammonia and Nitrite.
I've checked both filters for any blockages and made sure there was nothing rotting in there but they both seemed ok which is what i expected as i had cleaned thema few weeks back. I've gone throguh the sand at the bottom to check there wasnt any rotting food but there isnt any there. I emailed Dave_oddballs who lives in Morcecambe/Lancaster ( uses same water supply as far as im aware as i live just across the bay) and he also had no problems until he had done a water change , he did a water change on his larger tank , he then noticed one of his rays swimming funny tested for ammonia and his was through the roof as well! he's changed water a few times and is going to try again in a bit. He tested his water which also has no ammonia or nitrite in it.

Any Ideas? I do have an RO Unit but this will take ages to produce enough water for a decent water change.

Anyhow off to start my 4 water change of the day!

Quick Edit, not sure on nitrates as i cannot find the bottle for testing it. Tank is a 100g filterd around 10x turn over an hour, been setup for over a year, never had any issues before.

Has there been any water supply problems in your area, if pipework has been done they could be overloading with chlorine to stop any nasty stuff living in your drinking water?

I assume you know what you're doing with water changes etc as you are keeping very expensive fish...I would hope you've been dechlorinating at least for the big changes?

Maybe worth doing a big water change again using double the dechlorinator you would normally use? Do you have a filter running else where that you can pinch filter media from in case you've wiped out your bacteria in this tanks filter?

Hi'

Yeh i do quite a lot of water changes and always remeber the dechlor, ive done 4 large water changes and one small one today, absolutly nakerd! Still showing ammonia in the water, doing my nut in! It has gone down a little which is promising, my oscar seems to be ok for now. I've got another filter on the go so will take some media out of that one incase the bacteria has somehow been wiped out :( I run two filters on the tank so hopefully if the bacteria was wiped out it should start to colonize and sort it's self out.
I was thinking about more dechlorinator incase it was the chlorine i could smell but i'd imagine if it's not chlorine causing the issues the dechlor could harm the fish ?

I'm going to order a HMA filter hopefully should get it tuesday wwednesday and start using that. a £100 or so filter could of saved me a lot of Fish! Totally gutted over all, soo close to throwing in the towel after this morning.

Hiya, sorry for your losses. I don't really have an answer for your issue but I have read that you can't really do any damage by adding too much de-chlorinater.

Will definitely be watching to see if what I have read is wrong.

Good luck with this, tis such a shame

Nothing missing other than what was accounted for this morning? I had an ammonia spike quite some time ago now which freaked me out, it turned out there was a couple of dead shrimp in the filter canister which was causing the problem...anything small enough to get into your filter and rot in there? Just a thought...might well be worth taking a look in your filter canisters....

You still have some beautiful fish right? Don't throw the towel in, you know you'd only regret it!

Theres dead shrimp in the tank most of the time as i feed them dried river shrimp:) but nah nothings missing , checked under the sand incase something had somehow got burried but nothing in there. Most of the fish are too large to get sucked into the filter. If it were not for my Poly's i probs would have quit. I'm looking into getting an auto water change system setup which will 24/7 change water to stop this happening again. I will try the dechlorinator tomorrow as my knee's are dodgy and carrying water's really making them sore. GF's said she'll help buy some of the fish back for me which is good i guess.

Really sorry to hear of your losses.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before or if you have done this any way but have you done a water test on the Water your using to do the water changes before you put the dechlorinater in?

Regards onebto

yup tested it for ammonia and nitrite and it comes out fine which is the bit thats confusing me, as i can litterlly do a 90% water change test straight away ans theres still ammonia there how can that be? maybe like a tiny bit in there but still afair amount, the fish are still ok this morning, ive got a few things to do today as i got nothing done yesterday, mainly through water changes then mopeing around the house in a mood, but i'll try and get a couple more water changes done daily until i get this HMA filter and work out how to do an auto water change on a tank without a sump. Might get the tank drilled just gotta find someone who can do it!

Just an update;

Water back to normal with no nitrite or ammonia in it, mentle or what! yesterday it seemed no matter how many water changes i did it didnt work. This morning i did a water change using a drinking water filter ( took bloody ages to produce 100gallons ) and left it a few hours before testing the water and it's all normal.

Still not 100% sure on why it happened, my guess is as suggested might of been more chllorine in the water, this may have killed the fish, the fish would have been dead in the water for a good 10 hours which would of produced the high measures of Ammonia.

I'm trying source my fish back from places but it'll take months to find the fish and actually work the over time to afford them :(

Least i know never ever to use tap water again!

Chlorine wouldn't have killed the fish I don't think, maybe a nasty ammonia spike that took place because of it did the deed?

Hopefully you manage to get the fish replaced easily enough, even if it might take a bit of time :(

I'm sorry for you mate, it's horrible to see this happen, it really is!
