after moving my LR over into the tank i haven't seen any sign of herman hermit, even gone so far as lifting out and inspecting every rock, there isn't even an empty or crushed shell and nothing in there could've eaten him as he was the only decent hitchhiker i had, got to admit i'm totally baffled

When I got my LR I saw no snails are I was looking at every piece, later on I saw 2 of them, after moving it around yesterday I saw none again so I think they are good at hiding! He must be there somewhere!

Any rocks with large holes/caverns he could be hiding away inside?

some donya but i had a good look into them and i dont really think the holes were big enough to take the shell. i didnt just dump him into the tank either i picked him up out of the storage vat and placed him carefully into the tank, and unless he can fly he couldnt climb back out

I can't believe some of the questions on here, I thought everyone knew Hermits could fly but only if the salinity and lighting levels are right.

Sorry back to the real world. Hermits will climb up the edge of the tank if they can get a grip on the silicone (at least mine do). They really don't like being out of the water though, quite often when you lift rocks out they will let go back into the water, so I can't see them climbing out of the tank. I wouldn't worry I bet he is there somewhere it's amazing what little holes they wriggle into to the point that they look stuck. More than once I have intervened to remove a Hermit from what I thought was a space they were jammed in, only to find him back there 2 mins later. I don't bother now although my wife still sometimes says "I'm sure he is stuck" and I'm forced to act.
