Hello all, really impressed with the board

I've had a Juwel 96 for about 5 years, it's been moderately succesful but always seems to be not quite up to scratch. After speaking to a couple of local fish places I am planning on getting an external filter, and in time replacing the built in unit with the external one.

Having had alook through the archives it seems that Eheim is the way to go. I'm quite willing to pay money for the right filter but at the moment am not to dure how far to go. I want one with the heater built in (if these are any good?) as it looks alot better and seems easier to look after.

At the moment I have the Pro 2324, Pro II 2126 and Wet+dry 2327 short listed. As the tank is only 100 litres would these over filter the water? Also would they be quiet as it will be positioned in open air behind a TV?

Any advice welcome,

Karl

:hi: to the boards Karlos!! I'd say the wet/dry one is the best. I'm not sure exactly how they work, but I have heard that they are extremely biologically efficient!
You can never overfilter a tank. the only problem you'l have is current, but I don't think Eheims, especially the Wet/Dry ones have a massive turnover rate, and you can always disperse it with a spray bar.
As for noise, You'll have no problems. Just make sure there is no air gap in the cannister and you'll be fine.

Oh well  After an epic session reading through the archives this morning I discounted the wet/dry one as there were a couple of mentions of noise. So I ordered an Eheim 2324. Does what I want, and you all seem to think they're pretty good. How long is it wise to run this in conjunction with the built in filter system before removing it?

I#ved just installed a Fluval 204 external filter and although the unit it silent you have to have the outlet above water level so you constantly have running water sound, On mine I lowered the flow a bit so I could get to sleep then open it up again in the morning.

Mines a new set up with no fish yet so can't answer that question so well, but as people say 2 weeks before you add fish I'd say run it alongside for 2 weeks, maybe add Nutrafin Cycle to help along the bateria!!

I have 2 204's and both of them have the outlets below the water line with no problems. Who told you it has to be above??

If it is a Juwel filter you are taking out, what I'd do is get the Ehiem set up, then take out the sponges from the juwel filter and put them in one of the baskets in the eheim. fill the other baskets with a good ceramic bio media, and some floss, or whatever else you want, then you can take out the juwel filter straight away!!!

You have the the outlet above the water line when you first start it up and get the water pumping in it. That's prolly where the confusion is coming from. After it's full of water you do get to move it back underwater..

I have a Fluval 204 canister filter...and it's quite magical. It's basically silent, and my water is always crystal clear. Maintenance is super easy, and doesn't have to be done very often.

yeh I'ved relaised that now, in the installation instructions it tells you to keep it up but doesn't tell you you can put it back down. Today i read some of the reatures and on the nozzle bit it says it can be submersed, I'll move it before bedtime!!

 good nights sleep for you tonight then?!! I actually find the sound of running water quite calming, so mine gets left on full just at the surface. Sends me to sleep a treat!!!!

try putting your outlet completely above water and see how you get on with that for sleep!!, i moved it down and it was almost silent, I'ved left it so it disturbs the surface a bit so you get bubbles on the surface.

I run my eheim externals alongside my juwel internals. I don't see a problem with extra filtration in tanks. My externals could do the job on their own, but I like the fact that if one filter breaks down......the other will still work while I fix the other!! :)

well ehiem is the best and the wet/dry ones are expensive but thay can and will handle a huge boi load and u can get the heater built-in wich is gd cos the water is heated more evenly.

fluval and Rena can be compared wit eachother but ehiem is in a legue of it's own. ur getting the very best (not including the industrial grade filter) but they're builtquality is excelent.

get the ehiem wet/dry of the proII. in the case of ehime the more u pay the better it gets.within reson
