hiya, i have a juwel rekord 700 (72 litre) which came with Juwel internal filter which is only rated at max 280 l/h. But i could buy a new pump head for it a bioflow 400 which is rated max 400 l/r.

right now i only have four 2 cm fish in there but after reading everything I would imagine that will not be enough once I stock my tank with more fish in future.

have been looking at the eheim ecco pro 130 or 200 canister filter (flow 600-750 l/h)  the 200 has more media space i think.

So bearing in mind im a total beginner and want something easy to clean and maintain would you say :   --------

1 - keep the juwel internal but upgrade to the 400 l/r pump head

2 - go for one of the smaller eheim canister filters

3 - go for a hob filter

cost isn't a factor as they're all pretty cheap but i doubt this internal rated bio flow 180 juwel is going to be enough filtration, i'd imagine all my 3 options will be enough filtration for my 70 litre tank so really want to know which would be easiest for me to use and clean etc.

thnx , becca

Canisters all the way, Out of the way, Easier to use and more bio space.

Canisters are much easier to maintain and keep your tank in top shape. Once I switched to canister filters, I also switched to inline heaters. Now everything is out of the tank except the filter intake and outflow.

definitely HOB for that size tank....aquaclear 50-70 or similar

personally i would go canister i am getting a new 88L tank and using a canister for that, but depends on what you want, if you rather have the equipment out of the tank or in the tank? they do the same job at the end of the day :D

Just ease of use and quiteness really.
I know both will do pretty much the same job.
Well think i would go cannister anyway but I'll wait see how this internal one first I GUESS.
My internal 1 only has 1 nitrax sponge, 1 fine sponge , 1 carbon sponge and then 1 little floss pad so I doubt it is going to hold much bio load at all, but it does still have room for more things so i may just get some of that bio media in the net bag and put that in as well and see.

sounds like a good plan to me :)

just use foam/sponge....as much as you can fit into it....ditch the carbon, no need for it

Yeah i did that, i had a place in the filter housing for a built in heater which i don't use so i got a coarse sponge and cut it into strips and stuffed it into that space too.
Seems to be doing fine , clean water and parameters so i'll stick with it

For that size tank you should probably get a large HOB. It would be easier to maintain, you pretty much just pop the cap off whilst its runinng and rinse the sponges out. You could also fill them with media and just rinse the media twice a year. If you get an external filter then get one with a spray bar because the powerhead would create too much turbulence in such a small tank.

Just to throw a wrench in the mix, I have a Fluval 204 running in my 20g (about the same size as yours) and I've never had a problem. The flow is just right, and it's the tank in the best shape as far as plant and fish health. No out-of-control algae or other problems.

Thanx.

Well I move quickly lol.

Changed the 70 litre and now have a 125 litre with eheim ecco pro 300 cannister and in line heater.

Going to put my lovely axolotl into the 70 litre now.

haha you do move quickly :)

nice before you know it you will have and want more and more tanks :p haha, well done on getting an inline heater to you wont regret them :D

got any pics?

well no pics yet as it's not set up lol.
just have the equipment and deciding on what sand etc
hopefully be up and running soon but i'm lazy :p
