Canister Filters

many lfs do! but you must be aware that any problems that crop up in one tank will transfered to the second.

You would have to bridge the two tanks with a piece of tubing. This means that they would end up having the same water level. Two tanks next to each other works out well for this, I've seen setups with 5 or 6 ten gallon tanks on a rack filterd by one canister filter.

You are basically using the tubing as a siphon, to transfer water from one tank to the next. Water seeks its own level, this would make the water levels identical. You then place the intake in one tank, the output in another. Water flows through the bridge from one tank to another.

If the tanks are on different levels this will not work, for tanks on different levels you need overflows with a sump filter. This is what many shops use, I have yet to see a shop use canisters, they are either sumps or air driven filters, such as sponge, box, or ugf.

okay, i thought lfs`s used canister filters, anyway i have a 4 foot/160litre tank that i am dividing into 2 tanks, what filter system do you recomend? i will be using 1 tank for breeding and one tank to seperate the babies from there parents. any ideas? thanks

Just thought of another idea... edited:

Why don't you get an external, and place the intake where the divider divides the tank into two... That way, you can put the spraybar on one half of the tank (parents(, and the other half of the spraybar on the fry's side... That way both tanks are recieving fresh water and so they are both being cleaned at the same time... Just a suggestion, but i am sure other people on here would have better ideas! :)
