Is it advisable to lubricate the rubber seals in canister filters with silicon from time to time? To prevent the rubber for being corroded by the water?

I seem to see a few reports of disasters with canister filters leaking for the seals where the impeller unit seals to the canister its self.

Consulting my spankingly new Eheim Ecco 2232 manual...

Den Dichtring am Pumpenkopf anfeuchten oder mit ..

Oops, wrong page...

To ensure proper functioning .. blah blah .. the O-ring must be dampened or lubricated with Vaseline.
If it becomes (more) difficult to move .. blah blah .. after a while you should renew the O-ring

Now, where's my Vaseline got to...

Andy

Edit: I wouldn't use Silicone if I were you - doesn't that dissolve rubber etc? Or am I thinking of something else?

It is always a good plan to get on line soon and purchase some replacement O-rings.
I have been using the magnum series canister pumps for many years myself, and some cleaning and lube never hurt the longevity of the rings. I recomend changing the O-ring on a yearly PM, and it never hurts to have a spare incase of an incident.

I was asking about silicon as its what I have around the house.

I use it on my Air soft guns\ air rifles to keep the rubber soft and prevent it from drying.

Do you think it will cause any problems if a little gets into the actual tanks water system
and would Vaseline do any harm?

The manufacturers of the filter, Eheim actually state the use of Vaseline. Should be A-OK then!

do you think I'd have to do the same thing for the o-ring on a powerhead?
