I've just read a lengthly article about treating ich using salt.

can i add salt to my tank - which contains a large plec?

for a detailled description of the problem, look here http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=172518

- it's on page 3.

many thanks.

EDIT

I just read that I can't... poo.

.

No Jamie you cannot use salt with plecos or any catfish. They don't have scales you see so this makes them very sensitive. You also have to be very careful with any meds that you use.

You can use salt with plecs, you just have to make sure it's low dose. I've used 1% in my tank with a Royal, a gibby, an ancistrus and an L077 in the past with no ill effects whatsoever (and at the time the ancistrus was only 1"). However, I'm not sure how effective a low dosage would be for ich.

So... is the standard malachite green / formalin based treatment for whitespot OK?

Read the bottle before you use it Jamie. It will normally warn about catfish on the bottle. Most meds do normally tell you to use half the dose if catfish are in the tank. :good:
