I just got a new tank with a filter, and was wondering if you can keep a goldfish and betta together.
NOT saying that I will do it,
NOT saying that I dont understand their water preferances, but I've heard goldfish prefer cold water, but will be happy with water on the warmer side (betta side) too.
Will they nip eachother?
HELP!

nope main reason being goldfish dont stay small for long, they will poop a lot different levels of filtration to deal with and in providing the goldfish with sufficient filtration you would be creating too much current for the betta.

bluntly no

1 the bettas tropical

2 the goldfish are coldwater

3 the goldfish need a huge tank any way so a bettas home would not be suitable

couldnt you just have posted this in one of the other 3 topics alredy. actually i think you did and someone said no?
as others have said no because of the temp diffrance and the amount of waste goldfish make and goldfish get way to big.

You need 20 gallons for a single goldfish

I chose not to post it in my other threads just because I wanted to start a new topic asking this specific question, nothing more.
And I wanted a variety of answers to see everyones opinion.

fair enough
but know you can keep them together a common willl proberly grow as long as the tank given the right conditions there a member of the carp familly so get pretty big. i cought i wild gold carp and that was 5lb and about 20cm.

ive caught a wild carp which was around 9 lbs and over 30 inches long!!!
cheers

i caught one that was this big

and thats not a fisherman's tale

You need a tank at least 4 feet long for a fancy goldfish to have space to swim and grow properly, a six foot tank or preferably a lare pond for common goldfish.

You'd need an external filter, possibly two of them.

Goldfish grow very large and are a coldwater species. A 5 gallon is only just about big enough for a betta, it isn't remotely in any way shape of form suitable for any type of goldfish ( nor a ten gallon, or a twenty) . Ever.

They are really unsuitable tank mates, to be honest.

+ The warmer the water, the more likely the goldfish is to get sick
+ The warmer the water, the more poop the goldfish will produce
+ If the water is a compromise between the two, neither will be happy
+ Goldfish get really big and should under no circumstances be put into a 5-10 gallon tank, even as babies
+ Goldfish will stunt their own growth if they feel the environment is too small for them to reach a sensible adult size in
+ Goldfish need very, very strong filtration and fast water flow, bettas need still water and gentle filtration
+ Goldfish have very high oxgyen needs that are unlikely to be met in a small, warm water tank
+ Goldfish are bullies and greedy, and could harm the betta or take it's food.

Really, it's a no-go. There is no such thing as a variety of opinions on this one. Any opinions that goldfish make good tropical fish or can be housed sensibly with bettas are so far off the mark that you really have to wonder where they get their information from.

i still dont get what is supposed to be the problem with bettea and bright coloured fish? ive kept mine with endlers no problem and there one of the brightist fish.
