Can We Split The Forum

I back the journal forum but thats it. We could split forums all day, but we wouldn't stumble across discussions and information by accident, which can often be the most useful. Most information is relevant and somehow interchangeable between the two.

As Gankutsuou says, how do we define the two?

General would be your section for accidental findings wouldn't it? :good:

And then the question of "what do my plants need" come up a lot. Lights, and so forth. I'd have asked a lot more questions about the "k" spectrum and my lights had there been one, as well as my c02 injections.

And the aquascape section would help a whole lot. It would benifit this community as a whole. I like that and the journal ideas best.

I feel like a sort of imposter here - because I don't visit very often. :p But that's the whole point isn't it - some of us low techies don't feel comfortable here - not because you're unfriendly or anything - but so many of you are so obviously enthusiastic about a plant keeping method that I'm not interested in.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be other divisions - just that I'd like a low tech one. The split doesn't have to be rigid - but low tech does not involve specialist lighting, or CO2 canisters, or calculating fertiliser concentrations or trimming the plants more than once a week.

Us low techies might well want to discuss the best variety of flourescent tube, whether yeast based CO2 is worth it - in low light - the best all-in-one fertiliser and whether it's worth having a specialist substrate. And most definitely I'd like to discuss the growing and tending of plants in less than ideal aquarium conditions.

I can't tell - just from browsing the topic titles - which threads would be relevant to me. So I don't come here very often.

I think if you have any doubt whether or not your tanks are low tech - then they're not! And I think most of us would know which section we'd be happiest in. If you aspire to a high tech tank but haven't yet got one - I don't think you're going to be thrown out of any high tech section as an imposter  .

I think you are a little off base here, and I do not understand why you and others are under this impression about the treatment of low-techers in this forum?

I'm sorry, but this is off-topic and if you want to remove this George, then go ahead, but if anybody here who feels that low-tech is not represented well in this forum, have a look at my signature. Four links to four extensive journals that are successful, low-tech, low-light, low-cost setups. Different tank sizes, from regular to pico. They are right there, all you have to do is click. In addition, a plant list that is catered specifically to low-maintenance tanks is also there. There are others here as well who have wonderful low-tech setups, that don't hesitate to offer advice when needed. I honestly don't feel that we're treated any differently. The comments in my journals are not in the least bit condescending from our resident high-techers, in fact they have offered wonderful advice and excellent criticism when I needed it.

Warmest,

llj :)

Sub-forums is something I've considered for a while now, especially with the large amount of traffic planted now enjoys.

The potential problem with just a hi-tech and low-tech split is where do you post other related threads? Not all planted related matters are exclusively low or hi-tech.

So, ideally we'd have a few sub-forums i.e. lighting, CO2, ferts, water chemistry, equipment, plants, journals, low-tech etc.

I'll have a word with other mods and admin and get back to you.

IMHO splitting it in this way might cause confusion unless there is still a general planted forum. We all know that planted tanks are about the mix of all aspects, and beacause of this, so many of the questions involve many of theses aspects all in one go. Thats why i believe that they need to be quite distinct sections such as, general, hardware/equipment, and journals.

Actually I didn't say low-techers were treated badly - or that there isn't enough information - or that low-tech wasn't represented (I've read all the pinned topics). I simply said that I didn't feel particularly comfortable amongst so many enthusiasts for high tech and would like to see a specific low tech section - am I not allowed to say that?

Of course, you are entitled to say that! It is what a forum is for! I just have never been made to feel uncomfortable by the high-tech enthusiasts, and was quite surprised by your remarks. Sorry if it seemed like I was jumping on you, that wasn't my intention at all. :flowers:

It doesn't really matter anyway. I'm sure George and the other moderators will come up with a good method to divide the Planted section, if that is in fact, what they decide to do. They'll take our considerations, of course, and they'll let us know.

Nah, ban the low-tech from TFF planted, that's what I say. If you aint got lots-a-light and pressurized CO2 then cheerio..... [joke]

I can`t understand where people get the "us and them" atmosphere from, or feel uncomfortable discussing plants with high tech enthusiasts. I comment on lldjma06`s tank and she comments on mine. We are fellow planted tank enthusiasts who approach the hobby from different directions, but still share the same hobby.

If anything, I should feel uncomfortable discussing matters with low tech plant heads because it looks more difficult than my method of throwing money, gadgets and various chemicals at my plants.

Cheers, Dave.

P.S. Just keep a separate sub section for journals. It would make them easier to follow.... and find.

No offence taken :D And I didn't mean to imply that the high techers were making me feel uncomfortable - it's all my own doing :p
I suspect you feel quite comfortable llj because you have high tech tanks too and understand what they're talking about.

Anyway - as you say - the moderators will decide .......... and have just read George's post

Oh and have now read Dave Spencer's post - could be here all day!

Apart from my feelings of incomprehension - making me feel uncomfortable - it would just be nice to have a quick look at a low tech planted forum - knowing it was entirely relevant to me. I don't have the time to scan through all the posts on the planted forum and check whether they are relevant to me. If you all decide you don't want one - fair enough :good:

yeah i don't know why people feel intimidated or anything by you lot.

i've come here asking real newbie questions and have had no probs, have even randomley pm'd some of you guys when i needed an answer in private (usually if i'm shopping for a pressie for Ian) and have never found anyone to be anything but helpful.

I'd say the only real reason for having a more beginner type section would be so you could get some decent pins up about basic topics and then not have the forum flooded with questions about weather they should get real plants or not and that sort of thing.

I really could be here all day :hyper:

I am starting to feel persecuted now

You see! Miss Wiggle is assuming that because I'm not high tech - I must be after a "more beginner type section".
Low tech isn't necessarily a precursor to high tech. It's a separate interest - related but different.

ha ha sorry should have made it clear...... not saying that at all. i understand the difference between low tech and beginner.

just saying i think a more useful distinction than high/low would be to have a beginner plants section.... sorry really didn't make that clear before, having a giddy day
