Can we split the planted tank forum into say low-tech and high tech like the livebearer section. It would be a bit easier to locate topics that the high tech folks are more interested in and same with the low-tech folks like me. Something to think about. :good:

I see the thoughts but unnecessary IMHO, it works fine at the moment for me anyway. And most questions relate to topics relevant to both low and high light tanks.

some forums have a half split, basically you go on the planted forum and it is split up into 2 BUT if you go on to the main section all the threads from both sections are there but you have the choice of only viewing threads in one of the two sections - it works quite well

I often thought it might help if there was a sub-section for journals, that way they could be found easier and not lost amongst all the posts. This way, people would get to see them all in one place and see how the tank has developed.

Sub-forums is something I've considered for a while now, especially with the large amount of traffic planted now enjoys.

The potential problem with just a hi-tech and low-tech split is where do you post other related threads? Not all planted related matters are exclusively low or hi-tech.

So, ideally we'd have a few sub-forums i.e. lighting, CO2, ferts, water chemistry, equipment, plants, journals, low-tech etc.

I'll have a word with other mods and admin and get back to you.

I like the idea of a subsection for journals. :hyper:
I'd have to agree with this and think it would be a good idea. I don't think a high tech and low tech split would be good because there is too much that would apply to both and also people just starting out with planted tanks may find it confusing deciding which one to post to.

well maybe don't split is as low tech and high tech as such, but maybe have a beginner plant section, then the 'normal' plant section.

so there's somewhere for all the newbies to go when they're trying to decide if they should get real/fake plants (pinned sticky idea) and what are good beginner plants etc and somewhere for all you plant nuts to chat about the more technical side of things.

I quite enjoy there only being one planted forum, as you can quickly glance over all the new topics and replys.

That's my thinking as well. Having been on other plant forums I find it tricky knowing where to look, at least with the current system you can check all the recent plant threads and don't have to spend loads of time trying each forum individually.

A subsection of Journals would be great. I find reading journals to be more entertaining and educational at the same time. It's also a great source of inspiration.

With journals in the main planted forum, sometimes I miss some of them, as the traffic is rather high. A subsection would help solve that. It'll also be easier to browse for journals in a subsection than in a main section with all other topics around.

Just my 2 cents tho.. :)

I agree with a subsection for journals. But where do we draw the line between high and low tech? That's always puzzled me. For example, my nano uses CO2 and a Tetra Substrate, and Tropica Fertilisation, so I tend to class is as high tech, but it's most certainly not EI, so I'm unsure of exactly how high tech it is! (Is there a definition that i've missed out on!)

As a member of several planted tank forums, what I like best about this forum is that there's a sense of comradery (sp). In other forums that are so heavily divided into subsections, people form cliques very quickly, and if your threads don't conform to a specific category, then your kind of ignored.

I like the following categories

Journals
Hardware
General
Algae (of course, we'd all end up here!, might as well be the general section! )
Aquascaping (Another nice subsection to consider, where people could post pictures of their tanks to get constructive criticism on layout. George could have a pinned topic on the various styles of layout, etc. I guess this could fit into general or be incorporated into journals, but competition links could be posted here as well)

I'm not a fan of the low-tech, high-tech split as many questions pertain to both and there are mid-techers out there, tanks that don't conform to either design. You could also move the Plant species index from it's current location to a divided plant section, but I guess we have to get cracking now on adding more species. Work, work, work...

I guess this was going to come into play sooner or later. We do have a lot more traffic now.

It's all George's fault, he had to go and become all famous and experty.

llj :)

lljdma06, I back your proposal in full.

But how do we define High and low tech?

I'd like to think myself high tech, as I've bought a c02 injection, 96 watt lights, and so on.....

but looking at a lot of tanks who even buy filter flows to suit the plants, I might be low tech....

Algae such as hair algae is a major problem of mine too, yet I never feel like making the topic because so many other people do. Had there been an Algae section, I would have brought it up.

Journal section - I love the Idea. But moving all those journals will take a lot of work... but I could almost say that it would bring a lot of people in to look at them.

And Aquascaping section is my favorite. I'd love specific Critiques on my tank! I really would! especially by those much more skilled at it.

edit - and george, I'm gonna probably take up a bet that one of my friends is going to make a tank that could rival yours out of a regular 10 gallon. But of course, sprucing it up with lights, co2, and all that jazz before planting.

We're gonna use checkerboard cichlids probably for the fish :hyper:'

It's a challenge. Better have all your tanks spruced up in the next 6 months :shifty:
