not trying to change your mind if you want to get one but if you are only going on holiday for a week they will be fine without being fed. when i went on holiday for 2 weeks i put a tablet in the tank and that kept them fell fed.
hoope this helps you.

Cant recommend one, but generally speaking, the fish should be ok for a week without food.

Give them a little extra each day for a week before you go, just to make sure they are not hungrey, do a good gravel vac/water change the day before you go and they should be fine.:)

I couldn't have put it better myself. Just leave the fish unfed. They will be absolutely fine.

One thing, when you come back, don't launch straight back into normal feeding as you will be likely to experience an ammonia spike. This is because the filter bacteria will have partially died back whilst you were gone due to the reduced fish waste.

Instead, start feeding 1/4 of the usual amount. Do this for a few days then increase it to 1/2 the usual amount and so on until you resume normal feeding again. This will give the bacteria a fighting chance to catch up with the waste being produced again without you experiencing ammonia spikes.

I'd also steer you away from holiday feeding blocks. Some people have success with them but others don't. I've heard of people coming back from holiday to a tank full of dead fish in water which resembles cement. Not worth the risk in my opinion. :good:

Are they REALLY gonna be ok not being fed for 7 days ? wont they get hungry or stressed ? I worry ...........!

No they won't get stressed, and yes they will get hungry but it won't do them any harm. Fish don't get fed every day in the wild, that only happens in fish tanks!

7 days will be absolutely fine.

If you are worried, feed them about one and a half times the usual amount for 1 week before going away (fatten them up a bit), on the day you leave change 50% of the water, make sure all equipment is working correctly, feed well and off you go. :good:

How about if you go away for a fortnight? What do you suggest?

Exactly the same. If you can get someone to feed them for you, all the better, but generally fish will be fine without food for 2 weeks, especially if you fatten them up a bit before you go! Tolak, a moderator on TFF has mentioned that he has left his fish unfed for 3 weeks before with no ill effect. The important thing is to re-introduce the feeding slowly, as i describe above.

I'd always recommend this option unless the fish are of a particularly sensitive species or the duration of the holiday was more than 14 days. IMO it is much safer than both holiday blocks and auto-feeders. I've heard some horror stories about both, but never about a fish dying from starvation due to not eating for 14 days. :good:

In a mature tank, they will be fine for weeks ! Avoid the temptation to "feed them a bit extra" before you go - this WILL cause problems... also fish shops sell "holiday" blocks of food - again a waste of time.
Fish scavenge, they wont go hungry...

I recently went on holiday for 2 weeks and as I didnt have anyone to feed my fish I let algae from a little and gave them some tetramin weekend food sticks.
I came back to happy fish and healthy water perameters.
Stay away from the blocks of holiday food they are held together with plaster

Getting friends to feed is also very dangerous...

Fish are cold-blooded and don't need that much food. They'll be fine.

Have decided to get a trusted friend to feed once in the week, and leave an exact dose of food for her to put it........thanks for the advice, I guess I feel better feeding them once in the week and know they will be ok with less than usual food........thanks all !!

Just make sure you leave out the one ration of food and hide the tub somewhere - they might just be tempted to give them more. Fish are opportunistic feeders, they could go for days on end in the wild not finding any food. Don't worry.

In nature fish constantly live on the brink starvation.
