one of my fish seems sick it just sits at the bottom of my tank ad when it tries to swim seems like it is blind and runs into stuff. I think he is dying but would like a second opinion.
I would if i had the equipment to test it with. I just got my tanksetup about a month ago and they seemed fine. All the other fish are very enercetic but this one. It has done this before a week ago all it did was lay under the heater and then after a day or two it was back to normal. Now it has been a couple days and he still lays under the heater and the tempis at 76.
can i buy a test kit at walmart i have no fish store around here for 45 miles and would like to get one today so that i can get some help? If so what kind of kit should i buy?
thank you i am on my way over to walmart to get a kit they sid they have something like that in stock. I am going to get what they have and order this kit if it is not the one they have. Thank you for the help and will be back with the readings in a few hours.
It looks like your tank is cycling . You should do a 50% water change ASAP. Also you should get a different test kit that measures ammonia, make sure it is a liquid test kit. Also what size it the tank and how many/ what kind of fish are in it?
ok it is a 10 gallon and i have 2 tetras and 1 guppy and this other fish which i have no clue what it is my girl friend bought it. It is the one i dont know what it is that is just floating around the bottom and it has white stringy stuff coming from it. It did this once before but it came back around but it has been two or three days and it stillis acking almost drunck bumping into stuff and not eating. It only moves its side fins and not its tail. I got the only one that they had at walmart till the one someone put in the page getts in.
Yeah do a 50% water change ASAP. Nitrite is toxic to fish, during a cycle you want to keep it at .25 or below. Also what does the other fish look like?
well it is about 2 inches long it is whiteish grey with black spots. It seems to be aggessive but not at the moment only when it comes to feeding them he pushes the other away. Has a big mouth and a big head i could take a pic but i dont think it will come out clear
ok when i do a water change do i take the fish out i did the first time which was a couple days ago so i could clean the whole tank?
No leave the fish in. Do you have a gravel vacuume or syphon? If not then use a large cup and pour the water into a pail until half of it is gone. Then discard the tank water and fill the pail up with water that is the same temp as the tank. Add dechlorinator to it then pour it into the tank.
Also read up on cycling. Here is a link that should help. You will have to be doing water test and water changes every day until the cycle is over with.
i have a small shop vac or can i use a small gold fish bown to take out the water and also i have never put anything into the water just put water in the tank ran for a few days and then put the fish in. I know that was wrong but it seemed ok for a few weeks then i did a complete 100% water change to clean tank and then put fish back in they all seemed fine till a few days ago the big one just sits at the bottom. The test kit i got tells me to add some aquarium salt and to do a 25% so i put some salt in and the big one seems to be moving around to the salt and swiming back and forth over it. It is more than he has done in three days but i still need to do a water change .
Yes do the water change. Ammonia and nitrite reduce the oxygen in the water, salt will help the fish breath a little better. Water changes are the only way to remove Nitrite. And since your nitrite is getting so high you should do a 50% water change the levels are still going to be high after this. I suggest doing another 50% water change tomorrow and then change 25% everyday until you get a reading of 0 ammonia and nitrite. Use the goldfish bowl not the shop vac, I use plastic food containers. This is a gravel vac your LPS should have them. They are really helpful during water changes.
