Hi,

I have just got a second tank, as I basically messed up with the first on with beginners mistakes!!! Feel terrible thankfully I have not lost any fish.

Anyway my question, the original tank nitrite is still too high at 0.3 everything else is ok, no ammonia Nitrate at 40.

The second tank has only been set up for 6 days, but the Nitrate is alot lower only a trace according to my test kit. Before I make another mistake, I was wanting to confirm that the second tank is ok to start transferring my fish to or has the first cycle not completed and it still might peek.

Any Help would be really appreciated as I really enjoy my fish and don’t want to put them through any more unnecessary stress.

To give you a bit more background

Tank 1

9 weeks old
60ltr
2 Dwarf Gourami
2 Small Bristlenose Catfish
4 Guppies
5 Danios (neon tetra size with red tail and black spot) sorry I cant remember the exact name.

Second Tank

6 days old
90ltrs

Future inhabitants

2 Dwarf Gourami (from the above tank)
2 Small Bristlenose Catfish (from the above tank)

I would like to have a couple more fish, does anyone have a suggestion of a pretty fish that will get on with the other two.

I have also been given a 3ft tank, but not planning on setting it up for a while probably until the cat fish need a larger space.

Cheers

Clo

It sounds like your first tank is all but cycled. I would leave it until it cycles fully. Just keep up water changes on it to keep nitrites low.

Mean time, do a fishless cycle on your second tank. Once thats done, transfer everything over. :good:

Thank you for your help

Your 1st tank is over stocked as you probably already know, so in all honesty you may well struggle to get the nitrites down to 0ppm where they should be. 2 water changes a week of about 20% would be a help until you can rehouse your bristlenoses in your new tank.

Are you fishless cycling your 2nd tank using ammonia. If not you should. Follow the add & wait method from the link in my sig. What will really speed things up is to squeeze your filter sponge from your 1st tank into the filter media of your 2nd tank. Also, move about a third of your filter sponge + ceramic media from your 1st filter into your second. Doing this, your 2nd tank should complete its fishless cycle with ammonia within a week I'd have thought.

:good:
