I have an EHEIM Pro-2 Cannister Filter that still has MECH and Substrate in it from when I had a freshwater system running last year. I am now ready to get back into the hobby and would like to know if I need to buy all new MECH and Substrate or if I can reuse the old stuff.

I realize all the good bacteria is dead and I would need to recycle the tank. The old canister and media has already been rinsed clean and dried.

Will it act as a new shelter for new bacteria colonies if I start over with it?

Thank Much!!

Give the media a good clean. If you had a disease outbreak in the old tank, I'd also sterilise using chlorine bleach, to ensure that no disease organisums are introduced with the media. Chlorine bleach must be used, as it will be nutralised by tap water conditioner if any traces remain when you re-connect to the tank :good:

Thanks for the reply. Any other comments from anyone regarding this question?

Its a really interesting question. If rabbut and Mik think bleach water then tap water will clean it up ok then I'd be tempted to believe them.

If you're still worried you might also pose it over in the Hardware forum.
