My daughter just bought a plastic simulated root thing at Petsmart. It's a mottled green-brown colour, and looks quite realistic, for a fake decoration.

It has been soaking in a bucket of tap water for 3 days. There is now an oily film on the water surface, and the ornament smells like a noxious chemical. The smell reminds me of freshly made fibreglass boats.

I suspect it is exuding something like a mold release agent. Anyone know? And has anyone confirmed any fish health problems linked to plastic ornaments?

In any case, I told her to take it back to the store for a refund, because why take a chance? Especially on something made in a country like China, that has far different consumer product safety standards than here in Canada.

I know what your talking about I had the same item, after a while my water start to smell really bad (2 days after water changes) then i notice it was the root decoration, I took it out and have left it out
