Can Oscars Recognize More Than 1 Person?

I dont know about oscar but my discus dont really seem to know who to who. When feeding they just comes up for food at my hand some time my dad will feed them and they seems to do the same so I doubt cichlid will remember people they see us as lunch time or dinner time signal lol.

I think the old wives tale about fish having a 4 second memory is tosh... my last tank of trops ALL knew when I reached for the flake.... I tried replacing it with same sized tin, different colours... but the ignored them, only when the REAL food was picked up did they get excited !

They actually proved that goldfish have at least a week long memory, instead of the widely accepted 3 second memory. I thought it was complete bull from the start.

My oscars recognize virtually anyone who is around the tank frequently, or even if they only come here once in a while. They put out a different response to each person, and my cousin Riley and I get the best ones, they are like dogs wagging tails when one of us are around. When i only are around, they will even be trained. I have actually trained them using freeze dried krill, but when that ran out, they got mad at me.

Oscars have even been observed watching tv. If i make my pair angry, they will hold a grudge for about a week, and then they begin to get over it. Fish, who are often thought to be stupid or brutish, are actually very smart. Some, such as oscars and triggerfish, can even give dogs and cats a run for their money. With the fish often coming out on top. Never underestimate a fish. :sly:

My fish can recognize food as well. The oscars, if they find they like a certain food, will only get excited if they see that particular can, and can differentiate between bags of the same shape, going for the colour they have found to be delicous. Also, they dont even have to see the can before getting excited, if they see my arm reaching for the food, they go bananas. However, if it is a can of food they dont like, they look at me like im a freak, lose their excitement, and swim away slowly. Fun!

P.S., the reason your discus do not behave personably is because discus are timid, and not very affectionate.

I have two Oscars in my room in a 125 gallon tank. They recognize me and always swim and stare at me when im around, They are great pets to chill and look at. They recognize my girlfriend who is over my house just as much as i am, thats pretty much it no one else really cares about them other then us. It all good I dont want my oscars falling for someone else and forgetting about good old me.

My oscar and midas hybri do the exact same thing! They have a red bag of Hikari cichlid gold, and a green bag of some other brand (which I'll never buy again, since they disapprove of it). The bags are the same shape, but they give me this "I hate you" look when I pull out the green one . I wouldn't use it at all, but I spent money on it, so by God they're going to finish off the bag!

They both can tell the difference between several different people, even ones they don't see often. For example, they always go NUTS when they see my dad even though he only comes in my room about once every 2-3 weeks, because they know he feeds them every time he shows up. They only go nuts for me when they see me reaching for the food, but they do beg me for attention sometimes :)

My oscar, Nibbler, can definately tell the difference between people. He always swims up and wags his tail when he sees me. If I don't give him the attention that he wants he will start knocking his toy (a floating plastic golf ball) against the cover to get my attention. He absolutely HATES my girlfriend though. When he sees her he starts attacking the side of the tank and thrashing around!
