I've done it twice this week. Usually I only do it once a week. I had loads of green algae all over the glass so decided to do the whole lot.

If I leave my lights on for about 5 hours the algae isn't a problem but I've had them on too much this week and there was loads!

I'm keeping my filter floss washed out twice a week but haven't touched the filter sponge since giving it a good cleaning a week or so ago.

Does cleaning too much get rid of good bacterias? I like to keep it nice and clean for my fish.

Since you had algae on the glass I think it was wise to clean that. Almost all your beneficial bacteria is in your filter media so I wouldn't clean it until it became clogged with debris or the flow from the filter was reduced.

providing you don't touch the filter sponges, during your cleaning, i cant see a problem. indeed with an algae problem, its what i would expect with an internal.

if excessive light is a common problem. have you considered a small UV unit? you just run it when you see a problem. it would avoid much of the muck clogging your floss, after cleaning.
