Just one thing that I keep trying to emphasize but no one seems to notice - the 'inch per gallon GUIDELINE' only applies to tiny, low-waste producing fish anyway - so, actualy, only small tetras apply to it - it is all those other fish that don't.

Anyway, to make something clear, you're planning a 30 gallon with 8 rummynoses (either flamehead or false - you didn't make which clear - both only grow to about 1.5" and are actualy smaller than the 'true' rummy), 8 silver-tip tetras (please specify the species), 2 emerald 'cories' (do you mean brochis? - give the scientific name please) and then you want room left over - for what exactly?

Let me start by saying that over-stocking is feasable but not a good idea. The filtration will solve the biological filtration issue but physical space is still a problem and oxygen even more so. You can slightly over-stock without much trouble so, with what you've listed above, if you stick with just 6 of each tetra and the 2 catfish, you can still fit some more fish in. But what exactly is it you wanted to add?

I would get atleast 6 cories, as they are shoaling fish, at the very minimum 3.

My advice would be to never "plan" on over stocking... If anything, keeping your tank slightly understocked in a great idea incase you come across a fish or 5 that you just have to have.

I have several 3foot, 35 gallon tanks with aqua clear 500's on and I would still not consider overstocking the tanks. From my experience anyhow, over stocking always led to problems down the road. You will find your fish will not be as happy and will not live as long if they are kept in an over populated tank.

Sure you can overstock, if you have a good idea as to the needs of the fish, and keep a close eye on water parameters & filtration. If you have a future plan for many of the fish, you can overstock like crazy. Most all lfs do it on a regular basis, they cover all 3 of those things.
