Actually this is a good question, as particles or fumes from carpet cleaning products can be as bad, if not worse than paint fumes. There have been plenty of questions about painting in a room with a tank set up, none of those are considered noob questions.
My wife has a carpet shampooer that she uses on a regular basis, with a tank in the living room. Some of the products have a strong odor, a combination of chemicals & deoderizer. She has used a large variety of shake on, spray on, & foaming products over the years. The fumes have yet to harm any fish in the tank, but they sure annoy me at times. Could just be me, I don't like any sort of perfumy stuff.
Before I set up that tank, I got one of those heavy acrylic desk pads for under the stand. Spilling some water when doing maintainance is unavoidable, this keeps it off the carpet. Keeps the shampooer away from the front of the tank as well.
You may want to try a pet odor neuteralizer, the type used for when pets have an accident indoors. A couple of squirts works great for pet mistakes, it should work for fish water spills.
The rest of my tanks are in the basement, on a concrete floor. I'm much less careful with those than the upstairs tank, the floor gets a good soaking at times. I have a collection of old towels for those spills. If I leave those towels wet with tank water for a couple of days, they really reek. I've found that just rinsing with tap water kills the smell immediately, probably due to the chlorine. The odor must be caused by bacteria, and easily killed ones at that.
