Since sometimes I have spilt some tank water when I do vacum cleanings its making my carpet stink so I was wondering if I could use this product called arm and hammer carpet and room pet fresh odor eliminator its like a carpet foam. So can I use it to eliminate the odors?

Or put a water proof sheet down when doing a vacum clean, then you will have a lovely carpet and no odours.

Durbkat no offence but you askt he stupidest questions and you seem like a real noob

He's only asking a question, does it matter, and there is no need to be rude.

Theres no such thing as a dumb question. I've never thought of it but durbkat does have a point in asking about this product.

Hi Durbkat, you might want to put a towel or 2 around the area that might get wet. Works for me in the past.

By the way, there are no dumb questions. All of us need help at some point.

Well damn I didn't expect this kind of response. I was just thinking about the strong smell it puts out and if it could hurt the fish if the odor got into the tanks. So take a damn chill pill I didn't want to kill my fish if the odors could be harmfull to them.

Durbkat..let it dry first and if it is already dry and smells a bit get some neutradol carpet fresh which eliminates nasty odours.....sprinkle it on and leave for a little while and hoover it back off...or if where u live dont sell it get a carpet fresh or something but if carpet is still wet the smell should dissapear as carpet drys :hey: p.s when sprinkling do it low down close to carpet then there is no risk ov particals floating near ur tanks

The carpet is dry but I can't use that powder stuff because I think I'm allergic to it because when I used in the living room when live x-mas tree stand cracked and leaked some water I used it when it dried and it made my legs itch like crazy to the point where my legs were almost solid red. The carpet foam stuff doesn't seem to bother me so I guess I'll use that. Thanks guys I guess I just didn't want to take a chance on the odor harming my fish so thats why I asked.

I don't think he'll know about the "shake 'n vac" ad in the US  it probably came out at the time he was born too ;) (no offence !!)

Durbkat, I'm terrible at spilling water too so I always have some big towels around my tanks when I do water cleans.

Yeah bloozoo2 is right I never heard of that jingle. I'll just use that carpet foam stuff.

Actually this is a good question, as particles or fumes from carpet cleaning products can be as bad, if not worse than paint fumes. There have been plenty of questions about painting in a room with a tank set up, none of those are considered noob questions.

My wife has a carpet shampooer that she uses on a regular basis, with a tank in the living room. Some of the products have a strong odor, a combination of chemicals & deoderizer. She has used a large variety of shake on, spray on, & foaming products over the years. The fumes have yet to harm any fish in the tank, but they sure annoy me at times. Could just be me, I don't like any sort of perfumy stuff.

Before I set up that tank, I got one of those heavy acrylic desk pads for under the stand. Spilling some water when doing maintainance is unavoidable, this keeps it off the carpet. Keeps the shampooer away from the front of the tank as well.

You may want to try a pet odor neuteralizer, the type used for when pets have an accident indoors. A couple of squirts works great for pet mistakes, it should work for fish water spills.

The rest of my tanks are in the basement, on a concrete floor. I'm much less careful with those than the upstairs tank, the floor gets a good soaking at times. I have a collection of old towels for those spills. If I leave those towels wet with tank water for a couple of days, they really reek. I've found that just rinsing with tap water kills the smell immediately, probably due to the chlorine. The odor must be caused by bacteria, and easily killed ones at that.
