Ok my beautiful bettas got boiled alive by my a faulty heating element :byebye: but it now means i have a tank free. after id taken them out i drained the tank as i wasn't planning to use it but ive got credit now from the store provided i get new fish to replace my bettas within 7 days so, i refilled the tank and its been running for 2 days now and is at temperature

stats are
pH 7.6 ( high but i got some ph down so not to worried)
Nitrate 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Ammonia 0ppm

Can i add fish unsure as filter was off for about 12 hours and out of water, used same gravel and haven't cleaned it as such just hoovered it, did rinse filter sponge but it was still wet anyway

Also any ideas for fish its a 7gallon tank but its also very long thin and tall, ive got a betta in another tank so fancy a change, also have an cichilid tank so again want something different but open to all ideas

Not much can be kept in a 7 gallon tank

I have a betta, pigmy cories and shrimp in a 5 gallon.

I don't know else except the african dwarf frogs

btw, a pH of 7.6 is not too high at all. I wouldn't mess with it

See i wanted to try something different from a betta a) cos there fairly hard to find where i am and B) because ive got one in another tank and id rather get a really nice one at a later date in the future. thinking of going with livebearers (did i mension its UK gallons so think its nearer 9 or something in US for what difference it makes

Hi hozb :)

If your gravel was covered with tank water the entire time, the bacteria on it is still probably alive. If you rinsed your filter with tap water, the bacteria on it are probably not.

With some saved bacteria, you will be able to cycle quickly and keep the damage to the fish to an absolute minimum if you do regular water tests and change water as often as necessary to bring the chemicals down. It's possible, if you get at lease one or two fish in it right away, that it won't recycle at all.

I do suggest that you get fish back into it as soon as possible to feed any bacteria that are there. :D

any ideas as to what i could get in that size tank comfortably?

only kept my betta and larger cichilids so far as i said was a tank for female betta's

IMHO you need to look for very small fish (ie no bigger than 3 or 4cms as adults)

look for microrasboras (Microrasbora gatesi, Microrasbora kubotai, Microrasbora nana and Microrasbora rubescens) there is also a danio (formerly Microrasbora) erythromicron.
See if you can find dadios (Chela dadiburjori) you could also have dwarf danios (danio nigrofasciatus)

maybe a trio of male guppies(no room for babies) or something like a school of neons. not much choice in a tank that small

Go to the British Killifish Assn. website. Surely theres someone near you with a small pair of killies idealy suited for a small tank. They are beautiful and easy to care for. I'm sure they will be glad to help you get started.
Good Luck

What about 4 white cloud mountain minnows? They're hardy and can live in relatively small tanks. You won't need a heater then either if your room is constantly warm enough for you to sit in.

I wouldn't go with the all male guppies because you'd only be able to get two or three at the most. I had 2 in my 10 gallon and they bought chased each other around and started nipping at each other's fins. I guess it was because there were no females so they just harassed each other to death.
