Well this question is for other in the UK who have come to the conclusion recently that they are going to be soon over run with platys. I have 2 females that are just dropping fry all the time. and I probably have about 20 juvis that are starting to show sex and will probably become pregnant as well. I see this as a disaster ahead.

Is it realistic for me to try and sell them privately on the classifieds? either here or aquarist classifieds? I just wonder if people actually go on those forums to buy Platys you know? Has anyone had a LFS buy platys from them? It just seems like the demand would be very low.

plz discuss

:)

my local LFS will take Platy juvis and not give anything for them. I think they are in that much of abundance, that if they are just the regular common platy, then you're gonna struggle selling them. But good luck! :good:

yeah this is what i expected. With platys it doesnt matter if u keep all males, or all females right? the males wont get aggressive or anything correct?

Keeping all males is fine, just make sure you have at least 4-5 to help spread aggression or 'frustration', if you can line breed Platy's and get some nice colour morphs then they'd probably be sought after.

SS is probably right about the demand for new or unusual platies but effective line breeding of a single feature requires a large investment in tanks. It takes at least 10 tanks to breed for a single characteristic and along the way enormous numbers of failures or partial successes must be sold off before you get the new characteristic fixed in your line. As a commercial venture it can be profitable, but as a way to make it easier to deal with excess fry, it would be counter-productive.

My LFS took about 70 off me one time and gave me 40pence each for them. He has always since asked me about breeding more but I said I didn't want to. He wasn't wanting fry, he was wanting them near adult so the time I have to look after and feed them it was no way of making money (that's not what I wanted to do anyway)
