I dont know where you get your fish but I'd stop going there if I were you, both of those look to be hybrid crap

IMHO. Theres no proper markings on either fish. If they were in my tank (which of course they wouldnt but..) they both would take a trip to the freezer.

Im starting to get that idea , i thought i had found a good shop at first but as my fish are growing there not looking as they should , i have allready got rid of 4 auratus and 3 Johanni i know how much of a bad choice those were now it looks as if 2 out of 4 yellow labs going and the afra , when i get chance i will post some pics of the other fish i have left.

thanks for advice.

woah , thats a horrible thing to say. they arent perfect so they would be euthanised!? they are still pretty fish and i wouldnt call them "hybrid crap" , thats just mean.

and doesnt mark 7616 have the first in his sig?

furry...

Do you not know what

IMHO

Means? If you did then you surely would have left it alone, and given your own advice,

but you didnt do that did you?

Incase you dont know, it means IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, thats it, nothing more nothing less. Will he take what I said and do it? Who knows, ITS UP TO HIM isnt it?

You say: "they are still pretty fish and i wouldnt call them "hybrid crap" , thats just mean."

THATS WOULD BE YOUR HUMBLE OPINION and you have that right, I'm not going to flame you for it so kindly give others the same respect you expect..

and you evidently dont know mbuna, that is NOT what is in marks sig.

Have a nice Day now ya'll :good:

no need to kak yourself. it doesnt matter if the letters imho are in front of something mean - its still mean. and no - i dont know my mbuna , and i never said i did. and anyway - you werent exactly being " humble " when you called that guys fish "hybrid crap" . anyway , take a chill pill - i meant no offense to you , and i hope there wont be any underlying animosity between us :good:

ed- and just so ya know - i did know what imho meant

The pic in my sig is a metriaclima greshakie and if you look at that and the pic adambrum has posted there not alike. As for why mama said what she did you will find about 80% of very keen african cichlid keepers would do the same thing there are already a hell of alot of different types out there already and people do not want to add to that with hybrid stuff its just not liked. That is why alot of people who end up with hybrid fishes cause 2 fish have interbred will either kill all the fry or just never let them leave there tank. Sure you may think they look pretty and some people yeah will want to keep them but a hell of alot of people do no agree with hybrid fish.

adambrum you must make up your own mind as to what to do with these fish. Most Malawi keepers prefer to have pure breed stock and I myself only buy wild. Ocassionally hybrids do occur when a male doesn't have a girlfriend of his own and decides his natural urges will be aimed at another female other than his own kind. One tip I have always used myself is if you see a fish you like..jot down its name, (if it doesn't have one and is called mixed malawi ..I'd personally give it a wide berth) go home and do a bit of research..then if it looks the real deal, buy it.

These fish are not going to be killed but they are going back but to a different shop, my consern is if i take them back to the shop where i got them from they will be sold again as yellow labs , i brought 4 labs 2 are like the photo and the other 2 are fine good markings .
does anyone know a good shop in the midlands area ?

The problem you will have is "good shops" wouldn't want them as they would know them to be hybrids. The other side of the coin is if they doen't know they are hybrids then the problem you have is just being passed to another customer.

I see what you mean , i dont want to keep these as there are 2 good labs in there and the last thing i want is more hybrids , looks like i might have to kul them,

Now before everyone jumps in look at the choice, keep them and get hybrids, take them back to a shop and someone else gets them and the problems start again, if there is a third choice it would be welcome , and they cant have a tank to themselves.

Just have to say something here - I don't like seeing hybrids myself but I don't think killing them is particularly fair either. Regardless of my personal morals on this subject though; don't freeze your fish - use a few drops of clove oil in a bowl of tank water for euthanasia as freezing is truly inhumane.

please explain how it's inhumane? have you ever done it?
Actually, sylvia is right, the way that freezing kills fish is by freezing their internal organs and blood supply. Can you imagine how thats feels? Please don't tell me you don't believe that fish feel pain. Clove oil is the best and most pain free (humane, gotta love that word) way to euthanise fish, as the fish lose consciousness before anything shuts down so to speak.

LOL you think it's that instantaneous?? It's not, they go into the sleep/dormant state since being in the dark and the water temp comes down slowly. It's not all dramatic like you think it is.

I'm still waiting on sylvias response though, wondering if she's ever done it.

as for me, I prefer swinging them against the counter,( in a bag of course, TOO MESSY otherwise) much faster that way.
