Hi All,

ive just bought some ramshorn and mts snails.

I have a small additional tank which i would like to breed them in.

The tank is say 20 litres, room temperature, no filter and just daylight available.

i have substrate and some plants and some pebbles

i was planning weekly water change instead of filteration.

No fish will be kept in this tank. I shall feed the snails with algae wafers/ flakes

purely snail breeding

Is this possible??

Thanks,

Dave

Yes, it's perfectly doable, IMO; my ex and my daughter keep snails, daphnia and other pond critters in a little tank on his kitchen windowsill, and I have some ramshorns that I keep in a goldfish bowl.

Snails make ammonia, plants need co2 even if its just atmospheric levels allowed in. You would, at the very least, need to agitate the surface to let gasses pass in both directions.

Breeding anything requires decent water conditions. Figure you will need to be doing a lot more than weekly changes if you want to replace filtration with them. In the end, if you are successful with the breeding, you will be doing them almost daily or even multiple time/day.

The MTS prefer to be under the substrate during the day. The ramshorn can reproduce rapidly.

I would suggest using filtration since there is a difference between merely keeping a few and breeding them.
